2019 Record: 12-4, 1st place AFC West, Super Bowl Champion
A Look Back: Where do we start with the team that not only won the Super Bowl, but did it in style? In all three of their postseason games, the Chiefs trailed by double digits only to come back and win by double digits. Along the way, Mahomes solidified his spot as the NFL’s best quarterback and, if we’re being honest, best player. As much as we all love Aaron Donald, there’s no comparison to the importance each man plays on his team. Quarterbacks need their own category when discussing the “best player in the league.”
The team had its rough patch in the middle of the season, going 1-3 in October, but recovered for a solid 7-1 run to cap out the year when it counted.
While they entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed, the Tennessee Titans knocking off the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round meant they never left Arrowhead until the Super Bowl. Then they made history once they got there.
2020 Projection: In spite of losing a handful of free agents, this team is loaded to make another run in 2020 (if there’s a 2020 run to be made). The only thing better than winning a Super Bowl is winning two Super Bowls and no team in the AFC has caught the Chiefs, at least with their offseason moves.
That’s not to say it’ll be a cruise for Mahomes, Reid and company. The AFC is loaded with good teams and their schedule is front loaded with match ups against the Houston Texans, Ravens and Cam Newton-led New England Patriots.
In spite of that, it would not shock me or anyone else to see this team open the year 4-0. And, frankly, if they do they might not lose a game. After those contests, their only games against teams that finished 2019 with winning records are a match up with the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 15 and one against the New Orleans Saints on Dec. 20.
2020 Projected Win Total: 13-3. As of this writing, over 11.5 wins for the Chiefs pays at -145 and 10-14 pays at -225, so the books are thinking the same thing I am; Kansas City is making another run. As long as Mahomes is healthy and Reid is the head coach, there’s no reason to think otherwise.
