This past offseason the New York Jets did the unthinkable – they hired what appears to be a competent NFL caliber head coach. Now, to be fair, the Jets have done this before. Todd Bowles, Rex Ryan and Herm Edwards were all guys highly sought after at the time, but with ownership zeroing in on Adam Gase back in 2019 with the Miami Dolphins’ bootprint still visible on his ass, no one knew how this coaching search was going to pan out.
They got Robert Saleh, former defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. They did alright.
But the coach is just the first piece of a the team rebuild puzzle. You need a quarterback and NFL caliber players, something the Jets did not enjoy in Gase’s two seasons at the helm. New York opened its new regime by drafting BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. Was it the right call? We won’t know for a couple of years, but what the Jets do have now is hope.
And that’s certainly new.

FORECAST
There’s a really good chance, considering their first two games are at the Carolina Panthers and hosting the New England Patriots, that Saleh could have these Jets starting at 2-0 and dominating the NFL Network and ESPN airwaves as pundits excitedly talk about the team’s young QB, its stout defense and its new coach. Then, in Week 3 they travel to the Denver Broncos and the wheels fly off with ensuing games against the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, at the Pats (a different beast in Foxboro) and so on.
I see a possible eight straight losses on the schedule, including one to a Cincinnati Bengals team that’s simply a year ahead.
Final Record Prediction: 6-11
