College Football Preview – Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Bedlam figures to be more exciting than usual. Typically, the Oklahoma Sooners dominate the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but the Cowboys have the upper hand this year. They will be playing at home and are favored per the college football betting odds. Oklahoma State will take part in next week’s Big 12 Championship Game no matter the result, but a win here would keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.

On Saturday, November 27, 2021, the Oklahoma State Cowboys will host the Oklahoma Sooners at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

College Football Betting Odds

Oklahoma +4.5

Oklahoma State -4.5

Total 49

This is a must-win game for Oklahoma as the Sooners won’t make it to the Big 12 Championship Game with a loss to the Cowboys provided Baylor takes care of business at home against Texas Tech earlier in the day. Oklahoma’s loss to Baylor means that the Sooners would lose the tiebreaker, and they have not been that impressive this season.

Oklahoma State squeaked past its three non-conference opponents. The Cowboys weren’t great early on in the season, but they have been sharp on defense. That’s a very different thing than we usually see from a Mike Gundy team. Oklahoma State has held three of its last four opponents to three points or less.

When Oklahoma Has the Ball

Caleb Williams has been more effective than Spencer Rattler under center. Williams is averaging 9.8 YPA with 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has run for 372 yards (7.0 YPC) with six touchdowns too, providing the Sooners with a mobile threat they didn’t have with Rattler.

Oklahoma has been very good running the ball. Kennedy Brooks has run for 972 yards (6.0 YPC) and 10 touchdowns, as the Sooners are averaging 5.3 YPC as a team. Marvin Mims is the top receiver, averaging 22.2 YPR.

The Cowboys have one of the best defenses in college football. Oklahoma State is allowing 14.8 PPG and 253.8 YPG. They rank in the top three in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, and are No. 1 in third down conversion percentage under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

When Oklahoma State Has the Ball

Spencer Sanders has not been as good of a quarterback as we usually see from Mike Gundy. He is completing just over 60% of his passes for 7.6 YPA with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. Sanders is averaging 4.2 YPC with five touchdowns on the ground.

Jaylen Warren is one of the best running backs in college football. Warren has run for 1,078 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, averaging 4.9 YPC. That has helped this offense move the chains with Sanders failing to develop as a passer.

The Sooners have not been great on defense. Oklahoma is allowing 8.2 YPA and 276 YPG through the air. Alex Grinch was thought to be turning around this defense, but they have struggled in 2021.

Prediction

Oklahoma State has to be the pick, and the under is a good play too. Neither offense will score as much as we usually see in this game, and the Cowboys’ defense will set the tone.
