College Football Preview – Georgia Bulldogs vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

The Georgia Bulldogs have been the best team in the country all season. Georgia is one of two unbeaten teams, and the Bulldogs have looked dominant throughout SEC play. Alabama has been a continual bogeyman for Georgia, but the Bulldogs are almost a touchdown favorite against the Crimson Tide and can essentially knock their rivals out of College Football Playoff contention with a win in the SEC Championship Game.

The SEC Championship Game will take place on Saturday, December 4, 2021, between the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide. This game will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia with kickoff coming at 4 p.m. ET on CBS.

College Football Betting Odds

Georgia -6.5

Alabama +6.5

Total 49.5

Georgia has only been seriously tested once this season. The Bulldogs beat the Clemson Tigers 10-3 in their season opener, but every other win has come by at least 17 points. They have allowed more than 10 points just three times all season, and no team has scored more than 17 points against this dominant defense.

The Crimson Tide have not been as overpowering as usual. They only beat 6-6 Florida on the road by two points, and they fell to Texas A&M in College Station. LSU and Arkansas both lost by one score in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama needed four overtimes to beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl last weekend.

When Georgia Has the Ball

Stetson Bennett has been the primary quarterback for Georgia this season. Bennett has played well, completing 65% of his passes for 10.8 YPA with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. J.T. Daniels has performed decently when called upon too, completing 72.3% of his passes for 7.7 YPA with seven touchdowns and three picks. It’s not an intimidating tandem, but if one struggles, the other one could move this offense better.

The Bulldogs are averaging 5.4 YPC and 202.1 YPG on the ground. Zamir White and James Cook are the primary running backs, but Kenny McIntosh and Kendall Milton are seeing action too in order to wear down defenses.

Alabama’s defense is allowing 20.5 PPG and 299.5 YPG. The front seven is allowing 2.5 YPC and 81.9 YPG, but teams have been able to throw against the Crimson Tide.

When Alabama Has the Ball

Bryce Young is the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Young has been superb in his first year as a starter for the Crimson Tide, completing 68.9% of his passes for 3,901 yards with 40 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is likely to become the first Alabama quarterback to win the award.

Jameson Williams and John Metchie III both have over 1,000 yards for the Crimson Tide. Williams is averaging 20.7 YPR with 13 touchdowns, while Metchie has 90 receptions. Brian Robinson Jr. is averaging 4.9 YPC as the top running back in this offense.

Georgia has the best defense in the country by a mile. The Bulldogs rank first in Defensive SP+, total defense (240.5 YPG), and scoring defense (6.9 PPG). Jordan Davis is fearsome in the middle of the defensive line, and Nakobe Dean has been an outstanding linebacker. Alabama’s offensive line has had a tough time with protection this year, and Georgia has 41 sacks through 12 games.

Prediction

This is going to be more than a coronation for Georgia. The Bulldogs will want to take it to the Crimson Tide after losing to Alabama twice in the SEC Championship Game and once in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game over the last decade. Georgia should put a hurting on Alabama in this game.
