There are two UFC titles up for grabs at UFC 269 this weekend. Charles Oliveira is defending his UFC Lightweight Championship against Dustin Poirier, while “The Lioness” Amanda Nunes looks to retain her UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship versus Julianna Pena. This is the last UFC pay-per-view event of 2021, and there are expected to be a lot of eyeballs considering there is no college football to compete with on Saturday night.
UFC 269 will be held at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday, December 11, 2021. The prelims will be available on ESPN2 and ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET, and the main card will get underway through ESPN+ PPV at 10 p.m. ET.
UFC 269 Picks
Charles Oliveira +130 vs. Dustin Poirier
It’s been over four years since submission specialist Charles Oliveira last lost a fight in the UFC. Oliveira won the UFC Lightweight Championship with a second round TKO over Michael Chandler at UFC 262, and he is one of the most feared fighters in UFC with his ability to finish his opponents. His 17 career finishes are the most in UFC history, and he has 19 submissions and nine knockouts in his 31 wins as an MMA fighter. Oliveira isn’t as battle tasted as Dustin Poirier, but he has to be the play in the main event as a moderately priced underdog.
Poirier has only entered the Octagon three times since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. He scored a unanimous decision win over Dan Hooker last summer before scoring two TKOs over Conor McGregor earlier this year. While Poirier is a loved and respected fighter, there is reason to be worried about how he can handle himself against Oliveira considering how much McGregor has fallen off.
Amanda Nunes -1000 vs. Julianna Pena
You can’t bet against Amanda Nunes. The Lioness has absolutely dominated all of her competition not named Valentina Shevchenko, and she is the greatest female fighter in the history of the UFC. It’s been over seven years since her last loss, and she has defended this belt five times since winning it over Miesha Tate at UFC 200.
Julianna Pena is simply out of her league. Pena has split her last four fights, and she was submitted by both Shevchenko and Germaine de Randamie. It’s a little surprising that she got this title shot in the first place, so she is unlikely to go the distance against Nunes.
Cody Garbrandt -135 vs. Kai Kara-France
Former UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt has lost four of his last five fights. Garbrandt was knocked out by T.J. Dillashaw (twice) and Pedro Munhoz, and he fell by unanimous decision to Rob Font in May. However, he is a favorite in this bout as he is still in his prime and is performing at a high level.
Kai Kara-France has lost two of his last four fights. He scored a first round knockout of Rogerio Bontorin at UFC 259 and won a Performance of the Night bonus, but this is a big step up in competition for him.
