Odds to Win the South Regional

The South Region is the most difficult region to navigate in the NCAA Tournament. Half the teams in this region could go on to win March Madness, as there is something to like about almost all the top seeds. Arizona is seen as the team to beat, and the Wildcats have the fortune of being on the top half of the bracket. The bottom half of the bracket is absolutely brutal, and the only easy games will be the first-round clashes that Villanova and Tennessee have with lesser opponents.

Arizona is the No. 1 seed in the South Region and has the second-best odds to win the NCAA Championship behind Gonzaga. The Wildcats are looking to make the Final Four for the first time since 2001, and they have a good chance of getting there. They were very impressive in non-conference play, and they boast three of the best players in the nation in Bennedict Mathurin, Christian Koloko, and Azuolas Tubelis. Mathurin is a probable lottery pick, while Koloko and Tubelis are both big men that can get it done down low.

There will be a lot of action on Tennessee to win the South Region after their performance in the SEC Tournament. A lot of commentators believed that the Volunteers were deserving of a No. 2 seed, but the Selection Committee put them on the No. 3 line. They are ranked seventh nationally according to Ken Pomeroy, and they have a great three-point shooter in Santiago Vescovi and a solid inside presence in John Fulkerson. This team is getting just a little too much hype though.

The better bet lies in Villanova to win the South Region at this price. Jay Wright has had a lot of success during March Madness in recent years, and the Wildcats just won the Big East Tournament. They have worked on the offensive problems that plagued them earlier in the year, and they have proven leaders like Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels as seniors.

Houston is an intriguing pick too. The Cougars are ranked fourth nationally according to Pomeroy. They are only a No. 5 seed in the region, but they made it to the Final Four last season. They have overcome the losses of Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark splendidly, and they are well-rounded on both offense and defense.

This is another region in which to ride a longshot as Michigan, Loyola Chicago, and Colorado State can all go on deep runs. Colorado State is the most lucrative option, and there is a lot to like about the Rams. David Roddy was the MWC Player of the Year for his performance this season, and he averaged 19.4 PPG and 7.6 RPG while making 57.4% of his field goals and 45.5% of his threes. The Rams are ranked 31^st according to Pomeroy’s ratings, so 66-1 is good value with a tested team that has a great offense.
