Odds to Win the West Regional

Gonzaga is the only team that is an odds-on favorite to win its region. The Bulldogs have lived up to the billing as a No. 1 seed more than any other program in recent years, but they have yet to claim that elusive national championship. They have made it to the Sweet Sixteen twice, the Elite Eight twice, and the National Championship Game twice in the last six NCAA Tournaments. Mark Few has been so close to the mountaintop, and this could be the year he finally reaches the summit.

The Bulldogs have two of the best players in the country in Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren. Timme was a huge difference maker for Gonzaga last year, and he has been nearly as good this season with 17.5 PPG and 6.3 RPG while making 58.8% of his field goals. Holmgren has been even better though, averaging 14.2 PPG and 9.6 RPG as a 7’0 freshman that has an insane set of skills. He is averaging 3.6 blocks a game and also hitting over 41% of his threes. The guards aren’t as good as they were last year, but it will be tough to take down Gonzaga.

To no one’s surprise, Duke is overrated going into the NCAA Tournament. There will be a lot of attention given to the Blue Devils as this is Coach K’s last season on the sidelines, but they shouldn’t have been a No. 2 seed. They are ranked 12th according to Ken Pomeroy’s metrics, and although they have wins over Gonzaga and Kentucky on their resume, they don’t have a lot of talent outside of Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore. Banchero is going to be a top five pick in the NBA Draft, and Moore has really stepped up his game as a junior.

The most value in the West Region lies with Texas Tech. The Red Raiders nearly won their first national championship three years ago under Chris Beard, and they are dangerous once again this season under former assistant Mark Adams. Texas Tech has the top-ranked defense in the nation according to Ken Pomeroy, and they are rated ahead of Duke too. They lost to Gonzaga earlier this year, but they beat Tennessee, knocked off Baylor twice, and they went to the Big 12 Championship Game.

Connecticut and Memphis have the most value outside of the top four seeds. The Huskies are the No. 5 seed in the West Region, and they are a solid all-around team that is battle tested in the tough Big East. Meanwhile, the Tigers might be the biggest wildcard in the NCAA Tournament. Memphis struggled most of the season, but the Tigers turned a corner in mid-January and went 12-2 the rest of the way with two wins over Houston. They had the No. 1 recruiting class in the country at the start of the season, so the talent is there for a deep run.
