The National League Central division looks to be very competitive once again. However, it seems to be getting increasingly clear that there are only three teams really in contention for this upcoming division title. Let’s see where the oddsmakers have these teams ranked heading into the new year.
Milwaukee Brewers
Odds: -125
The Milwaukee Brewers were the division winners a season ago with a 95-67 record to show for it. They boast a ridiculously talented pitching rotation featuring Freddie Peralta, Brandon Woodruff and CY Young Award winner Corbin Burns. We haven’t even mentioned that they have a former MVP in Christian Yelich on the roster still. Assuming the pitching staff can find a way to repeat their recent success, then there is no reason to believe that they won’t win the division title.
St. Louis Cardinals
Odds: +210
The St. Louis Cardinals have been to three straight playoffs now with 252 wins over their last three seasons. However, the team decided to let go of their manager Mike Shildt. This caught a lot of people by surprise, especially after they hired Oliver Marmol. Marmol will now become the youngest manager that the league has to offer at the young age of 35. The Cardinals still have a very deep lineup with talent everywhere, though leadership questions may be pushing them down the rankings right now.
Cincinnati Reds
Odds: +700
Here we have a true wildcard in the division. The Cincinnati Reds have mixed expectations. They have the reigning Rookie of the Year in Jonathan India along with Joey Votto and Jesse Winker. Although, they watched Nicholas Castellanos leave the team. His attitude and swagger will surely be missed as this upcoming season drags along. Cincinnati has talent to compete for the title, but hasn’t had any consistency lately to prove that they are going to turn it around.
Chicago Cubs
Odds: +1200
This is going to be a completely different Chicago Cubs roster moving forward. Everybody that was on that 2016 World Series Championship roster is seemingly gone after they moved Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez. Since then, they have signed a few good players to try and stay competitive. Among them are Marcus Stroman and Wade Miley. Chicago won’t be one of the worst teams in the league, but they really don’t look like they are in a position to contend for the division title.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Odds: +5000
Finally, we come to the Pittsburgh Pirates. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering how the last few years they have suffered through. Many fans consider them to be the flat-out worst team in the MLB and they don’t have any household names. The only positive that Pittsburgh can really take with them moving forward is that their farm system is one of the best that the league has to offer. Even if they improve from recent years, it seems like a guarantee that they won’t be winning the title.
