With the MLB season right in front of us now, futures bets are looking more enticing than ever. Sportsbooks had released their odds-on what player will be able to lead the league in home runs for this 2022 season. Here are four of the best bets to make in this category.
Matt Olson (+1300)
Matt Olson had 39 home runs in 2021. Not a bad number by any stretch, but not enough to win him the title. Still, Olson looked a lot better in his most recent campaign than he ever has in his career to this point. He put together batting averages of .271/.371/.540 and if he is able to improve a little bit again this upcoming season then he could be a sleeper for the crown.
Pete Alonso (+1200)
Pete Alonso is a two-time Home Run Derby champion and is just a few years removed from obtaining this crown with 53 home runs in a single season. The New York Mets lean heavily on his shoulders for production in the batting lineup and for the most part he has answered that responsibility. However, he didn’t have a great 2021 year. He hit just two home runs during the month of May and five in April. He started to pick it up down the stretch but a slump like that could take him out of the running. These slumps come so infrequently for him that we could see him at the top again in 2022.
Fernando Tatis Jr (+900)
Fernando Tatis could arguably be thrown up to the number one spot here this upcoming season. He is without a doubt one of the best bets you can make for this title. Tatis was able to finish in fifth for the most home runs hit in 2021 at 42. He was able to do that with just 478 at bats. The league leader in home runs was able to get 126 more opportunities than Tatis was and yet the margin was just five home runs between them at the end of the year. Unfortunately, he has a bit of a long injury history. Tatis missed 32 games last year but that is enough time to create a difference between the home run king and just a top-10 finish in the race.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr (+750)
The second junior in a row, Vladimir Guerrero. Guerrero is expected to be the home run king after knocking it out of the park 48 times last season. He tied with Salvador Perez with this number of homers. However, one of the most impressive features about Guerrero’s season is that he doesn’t often waste opportunities at the plate. In fact, he struck out the least number of times of anybody in the top-13 in home runs last year with 110. It’s not every day that you see a batter with this much power and this much efficiency when he’s up to bat. If he can replicate his 2021 campaign then he is in prime position to claim the crown in 2022.
