TNF WEEK 3: GIANTS @ 49ERS

BY ADAM GREENE

Our first Amazon Prime Thursday nighter looked like a dud for a solid quarter, but it picked up and turned into a pretty good game by the time it was over. I’m not feeling as confident about this one as the New York Giants make the trip across the great US of A to the West Coast to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

There used to be a solid rivalry between these two teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series began in 1952 with the New York Football Giants claiming a 24-14 win. The all-time series is tied at 21-21 thanks to the Niners winning their last match up back in Sep. 2020. San Fran took it 36-9. Nick Mullens did the job at QB for the 49ers, going 25 of 36 passing for 343 yards, one touchdown and no picks. Brandon Aiyuk hauled in five passes for 70 yards. The Giants got a 17 of 32 day out of Daniel Jones for 179 yards, no TDs and an interception. Jones led the G-men with five carries for 49 yards.

NEW YORK GIANTS AT SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (-10.5, O/U: 45)

Location: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif.

Broadcast: Prime Video

Kickoff: Sep. 21. 8:15 p.m.

NEW YORK GIANTS (1-1)

New York needed a 17-0 shutout performance in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat the Arizona Cardinals (who might be the worst team in the NFL), 31-28. Jones had a nice statistical day, going 26 of 37 for 321 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He rushed nine times for 59 yards and a score and was sacked three times. Saquon Barkley had 17 carries for 63 yards and a score. He added six receptions for 29 yards and a TD. Jalin Hyatt led the Giants with two catches for 89 yards. Darren Waller had six grabs for 76 yards. The defense never laid a finger on Joshua Dobbs.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (2-0)

The 49ers kept their record spotless in spite of a surprising (to some) tough match up with the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday, winning 30-23. Brock Purdy was efficient on the day, going 17 of 25 passing for 206 yards, no touchdowns and no picks. He was sacked once. Christian McCaffrey rushed 20 times for 116 yards and a TD. He added three catches for 19 yards. Deebo Samuel hauled in six passes for 63 yards and rushed five times for 38 yards and a score. The defense sacked Matthew Stafford once and picked him off twice.

THE PICK

I can’t imagine anyone picking the Giants to win this game. The only question is if the Niners can cover -10.5. I’m confident they can. This one should not be close. 49ers 31, Giants 17
