SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL WEEK 4: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS AT NEW YORK JETS

BY ADAM GREENE

Back in the preseason, this game looked like a slam dunk for a Sunday Night Football contest. Who wouldn’t want to watch Patrick Mahomes face off against Aaron Rodgers for the first time? Well, apparently The Fates, because it ain’t happening. Now, the best game of Sunday is kicking off at 1 p.m. and we get this slog.

But, lo, the NFL does not care in the least because the ratings will remain huge because, periodically, the camera will pan up to the owner’s booth looking for one Taylor Swift as the Kansas City Chiefs travel to New Jersey to take on the hapless New York Jets right after Cris Collinsworth gently touches butt cheeks to Mike Terico on his patented slide in.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS AT NEW YORK JETS (+8.5, O/U: 41.5)

Location: MetLife Stadium, Easter Rutherford, N.J.

Broadcast: NBC

Kickoff: Oct. 1 8:20 p.m.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (2-1)

Ok, sure, Taylor was there and it was tons of fun, but the Chiefs still got the job done on the field last week, dominating the Chicago Bears 41-10 in Arrowhead. Patrick Mahomes finished his night 24 of 33 for 272 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the victory. He scrambled three times for 28 yards and was not sacked. Isiah Pacheco rushed 15 times for 62 yards and a score. Clyde Edwards-Helaire also had 15 rushes for 55 yards and a score. In addition to hauling in Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce caught seven passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Jerrick McKinnon caught three passes for 19 yards and two of them ended up in the endzone, so all you guys who did your fantasy football drafts on autopick probably had a nice night. The defense sacked Justin Fields three times and held up under 100 yards passing. They picked him off once.

NEW YORK JETS (1-2)

In what has become an annual tradition, the Jets lost a downright hideous game against the New England Patriots, 15-10, and didn’t have so much as an Ashley Simpson at the game. Well, maybe she was working the fried clams stand. I haven’t checked her time sheet. Zach Wilson, and I hope you are sitting down, was terrible, finishing 18 of 36 passing for 156 yards, no touchdowns, but, hey, no picks either. He was sacked thrice. The team rushed for a combined 38 yards. Garrett Wilson caught five passes for 48 yards. New York’s defense did not lay a finger on Mac Jones.

THE PICK

Listen, we all know what’s going to happen here. New York’s defense is playing with pride, but the stadium is going to be overrun by Swifties snapping up every ticket on the secondary market. I’m expecting a lot of Kelcie jerseys in the crowd and a lot of Kelcie himself in the endzone scoring. And probably later that night back at the hotel as well. Chiefs 38, Jets 13
