Stanley Cup Winner–Canadian Team vs The Field

It’s been 31 years since a team north of the border raised the Stanley Cup as teams

based in the States have dominated championship play. Yes, the odds are even more

stacked up against the seven Canadian teams since the expansion into Vegas and

Seattle, but this could be the year that things change.

Canadian Teams +200

With four Canadian teams firmly in a playoff spot, that gives Canada a 25% chance to

see one of their teams hoist Lord Stanley’s mug. Since Montreal brought the Cup home

in 1993, a Canadian team has been to the finals just six times with the Habs being the

most recent squad to nearly go all the way in 2021. That includes a three year span

where a Canadian team played second fiddle in the finals. The execution from the

Canadian clubs has put the league on notice this season. We saw Edmonton go on a

sixteen-game win streak and Vancouver has been jockeying for top spot in the league

for most of the season. Add in to the fact that Winnipeg has the overall depth in each

position to go on a serious run and the United States streak might end. The talent alone

on the Canadian teams has been dominant this year. You have the depth of Vancouver,

the star power in both Toronto and Edmonton and then there’s the quiet confidence of

Winnipeg. This may be Canada’s best chance to see a Stanley Cup parade in one of

their beautiful cities.

The Field -300

With the consistent expansion into the United States, the odds are consistently in their

favor to be crowned Champs at the end of the season. With 25 teams to choose from,

it’s not surprising that we’ve seen 23 Stanley Cup Finals consisting of just American

squads since 1993. It is a bit ironic that 19 of those Finals have seen the Conn Smythe

won by a Canadian player but I digress. From the defiant Bruins rise to the top all the

way to the resilient Rangers who went on a win streak that reached double-digits, the

American clubs are always a threat. With talent such as Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita

Kucherov down south, the dominance from below the 49th could continue.
