The Kansas City Chiefs watched Patrick Mahomes briefly leave their Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, then watched Tyreek Hill get hurt. They have some reasons to be concerned with the depth on their roster. The Oakland Raiders are in the same boat after losing two starters in their secondary. With both teams coming off of positive efforts in Week 1, who’ll be able to maintain that momentum in Week 2?

WHY THE CHIEFS WILL COVER THE SPREAD

If they’re offense continues to be electric.

The Chiefs will miss Tyreek Hill and his ability to stretch a defense. They will need to make sure Patrick Mahomes does not get hit too many times. They have reasons to be concerned. Yet, they were a lot better than the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in Week 1. Their offense still had a lot of options and resources the Jaguars could not easily defend. The Chiefs are a team which is simply going to score at least 30 points in most of the games it plays because the offense is that good, Mahomes is that talented and coach Andy Reid is that smart with his weapons. The Chiefs are going to put at least 30 points on the board in this game, which immediately puts a big burden on the Raiders to have to play nearly perfect offense just to stay close.

Kansas City does not have a great defense, but its defense does not have to be great to win games. It just has to be decent. There will be a lot of scoring both ways but the Raiders will settle for a field goals here and there while the Chiefs will strike with touchdowns.

WHY THE RAIDERS WILL COVER THE SPREAD

If they play with the same fire they had in Week 1.

The Raiders did not play Mahomes in Week 1. They played Joe Flacco instead. Nevertheless, it is still true that the Raiders held the Denver Broncos in check and played particularly well in the red zone. They did exactly what they were supposed to do and took care of business and looked like a competent team.

What is important to note in the Raiders-Broncos game is that Oakland did not fall apart after the departure of Antonio Brown; it brought them closer together. This team looked focused and showed more unity than a lot of people were ready to expect.

In this spot, if Carr can be efficient and they can move the chains with short throws and running the ball with Jacobs, they could spring an upset. They just have to dictate the pace and force the Chiefs into their style of game.

TAKING A LOOK AT THE TOTAL

The Raiders did play a decent game against the Broncos, but there is no getting around the fact that the Broncos’ offense is horrible and the Chiefs’ offense is great. Those two offenses are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in the NFL. That means the Chiefs are going to put points on the board. This looks like an over game, with the Chiefs scoring a ton and the Raiders scoring enough to top the number.
