Heisman Trophy Betting Odds Update for October 15, 2019

In a season where the chalk has largely prevailed, it’s no surprise that the best players on the best teams in the country are the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. Only five players are now seen as contenders to win the top individual award in college football per the Heisman Trophy betting odds , and it’s highly unlikely that a new challenger will award considering we have seen Trevor Lawrence, Jake Fromm, Sam Ehlinger, and others fall out of the race. None of the surprising unbeaten teams have a player worthy of claiming the Heisman Trophy, making this year’s competition a five-horse race.

ODDS TO WIN 2019 HEISMAN TROPHY

TUA TAGOVAILOA -175
JOE BURROW +375
JALEN HURTS +450
JUSTIN FIELDS +1000
JONATHAN TAYLOR +1000

Another great performance this past Saturday has made Tua Tagovailoa an even larger favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Tagovailoa had his worst game of the season, tossing his first interception of the year, and he only averaged 8.6 yards per attempt against Texas A&M. However, the Aggies have an excellent defense, and Tagovailoa still led the Crimson Tide to a 47-28 victory.

It’s Tagovailoa’s Heisman Trophy to lose, and if Alabama finishes the regular season unbeaten, it’s hard to see a way he misses out on the award once more. A date with LSU and his biggest competition in Joe Burrow looms large, but Tagovailoa should have the upper hand provided the Crimson Tide win that game. Alabama is expected to be favored by more than a touchdown per the college football betting odds, and the Tigers haven’t knocked off the Crimson Tide since 2011.

Burrow has established himself as the No. 1 contender, and the LSU quarterback was fantastic in a 42-28 win over Florida last Saturday. He is on pace to smash the single season completion percentage record set by Colt McCoy over a decade ago, as he is completing 79.6 percent of his passes through six games.

We haven’t seen a quarterback improve this much as a senior since Carson Palmer went from a mid-round pick at best to the No. 1 overall pick after a 2002 campaign that saw the USC product win the Heisman Trophy. Burrow is out to follow in his footsteps, and he should have another big day this Saturday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Jalen Hurts needed to have a phenomenal day against Texas to have a real chance to win the Heisman Trophy. Hurts was very good in a 34-27 win for Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout, but he didn’t have the massive game he needed given the exhaustion when it comes to Oklahoma quarterbacks among Heisman voters, and the perceived inability of the Big 12 to play defense.

The Big 12 is the strongest it has been in years if you look at advanced metrics, but the conference is not seen in the same light as the Big Ten or the SEC. For Hurts to win the Heisman, the other four contenders will need to have at least two bad games down the stretch, and that’s unlikely to happen. His Heisman Trophy betting odds should be much longer.

Justin Fields remains my favorite bet to win the Heisman Trophy. Fields has the long odds that make a bet on him a tempting proposition, and Ohio State’s remaining schedule works in his favor. The Buckeyes will face Wisconsin next week in a premier game that Ohio State will be favored to win, and the Buckeyes close out their season with tilts against Penn State and Michigan before a potential appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game.

The former Georgia quarterback does not have the lofty numbers of his fellow contenders, but he can ramp up in a way that the others can’t given the attention we have given them already. Big games in two of those three tilts would establish Fields as one of the top two or three contenders.

Jonathan Taylor has an uphill battle if he is going to be the second running back to win the Heisman Trophy this decade. Taylor must lead Wisconsin to a win over Ohio State in Columbus to have a legitimate chance to win the award, and that’s an unlikely proposition. The Buckeyes defense has been phenomenal this year, so Taylor’s dreams are likely to come to an end next week.
