Kansas City Chiefs See Super Bowl Odds Plummet After Mahomes Injury

It hasn’t been a good October for the Kansas City Chiefs. They suffered through a two game losing streak and in the process fell down the Super Bowl futures betting board. They had been in one of the top two spots all season long until the back to back losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.

From the ‘frying pan into the fire’. They picked up a nice win over the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football this week but despite the victory things got worse–they lost star quarterback Patrick Mahomes for at least several weeks. Mahomes dislocated his right kneecap–a right patellar dislocation for all of you orthopedic surgeons in the readership–in the second quarter of Thursday’s 30-6 road victory over the Broncos.

There is a ‘silver lining’ in this dark cloud. Reports indicate that a MRI came back with a ‘best case scenario’ given the circumstances. Mahomes suffered no additional damage beyond the kneecap dislocation. Given the risk of broken bones or ligament damage in a situation like this things could have been significantly worse. A timeframe of 3 to 4 weeks and/or three games was given initially but the positive MRI provided hope that Mahomes could be back sooner.

You can also expect to see an adjustment to Kansas City’s weekly game lines until Mahomes is back in action. Oddsmakers peg the reigning MVP’s value to a pointspread at 6 to 8 points, depending on the opponent. The Chiefs were 4 point favorites against Green Bay in Week 8 prior to the Mahomes injury.

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid appeared to have little concrete information when he spoke to reporters on Friday:

“I just know what I know: The kid had the MRI, and we don’t have all the information. That is what I can give you. I am trying to tell you what is real. Once I get all the information, we will give you everything that kind of happened and what’s going on here … the whole deal. We don’t hide that.”

Veteran Matt Moore will replace Mahomes until his return. Reid praised his performance in relief of the starter:

“He is a pro and has done a nice job. Hard to be a relief pitcher. He has done it before. There’s a certain way to prep for that. He understands that. It paid off for him. The best part is we didn’t have to change up a lot of things. Hard thing to do is if one backup comes in and you have to change the whole offense. We didn’t have to do that for him.”

The second part of Reid’s comment is crucial. Mahomes is a great quarterback and would excel on any team but the reality is that he’s that much better because of the system he plays within. Reid is considered one of the best coaching minds in the business so the Chiefs should be able to persevere in the near term despite Mahomes’ absence.
