Every Sunday morning, the NFL’s national reporters unload injury news and other tidbits to inform our gambling decisions. Here are some of the top news items and what they mean.
PLAYERS RULED OUT
Players out for Sunday include Alvin Kamara, Drew Brees, Jared Cook, Davante Adams, Darnell Savage, Tyrell Williams, Chris Thompson, Sterling Shepard, Parris Campbell, A.J. Green, William Jackson, Dre Kirkpatrick, DeSean Jackson, Darren Sproles, Jason Peters, Will Dissly.

Drew Brees is improving but it will be at least another week. Alvin Kamara, after being a close call last week, won’t go this week. The bye wasn’t enough for Tyrell Williams to get over his plantar fasciitis. A.J. Green was possibly going to return, but he has “a little ways to go.” DeSean Jackson will sit for the fifth straight week.
Though not mentioned in the tweet, Josh Gordon is not expected to suit up for the Patriots on Monday night.
PLAYERS BACK
Players returning to action Sunday include RB Saquon Barkley, TE Evan Engram, RB Devin Singletary, CB Jalen Ramsey, RB Todd Gurley, OT Tyron Smith.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 20, 2019
The Giants obviously get the biggest boost with the return of Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram. The Rams’ Todd Gurley and Jalen Ramsey have recovered enough to play (if Ramsey was ever injured to begin with). Devin Singletary could feast against the Dolphins and Tyron Smith should help Dallas get back on track.
MORE GOOD NEWS FOR THE COWBOYS
Five Cowboys listed as questionable – Amari Cooper (thigh), Randall Cobb (back), Tyron Smith (ankle), La’el Collins (knee), Byron Jones (hamstring) – all are expected to play tonight against the Eagles, per sources.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 20, 2019
Smith won’t be the only injured player to return. Amari Cooper’s status was up in the air all week and his return is especially welcome.
DEDE WESTBROOK (JAX) IS “LIKELY TO PLAY”
Jaguars’ WR Dede Westbrook, listed as questionable for today’s game against the Bengals, is likely to play but team first wants to check him out in warmups to make sure, per source.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 20, 2019
DJ Chark is leading Jacksonville’s receiving corps by a wide margin, though Westbrook has been solid in his own right. He still needs to get through warmups and late-week injury report additions are always worrisome.
DAVID JOHNSON (ARI) EXPECTED TO PLAY
Cardinals’ RB David Johnson, listed as questionable for today’s game against the Giants due to an ankle injury, is expected to play, per source.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 20, 2019
For the second straight week, Johnson is a close call and a game-time decision. Also for the second straight week, Adam Schefter announces Johnson will play well before inactive players are announced.
MITCHELL TRUBISKY (CHI) TO RETURN AGAINST NEW ORLEANS
Bears’ QB Mitchell Trubisky, listed as questionable for today’s game against the Saints due to a shoulder injury, will play, per sources.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 20, 2019
Trubisky missed most of Week 4, all of Week 5 and had the Week 6 bye to get healthy. He practiced fully every day this week so he should be back in the starting lineup.
SOME OPTIMISM FOR GREEN BAY RECEIVERS
#Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (ankle, knee) is listed as questionable, but he is hopeful he can go, source said. WR Geronimo Allison (concussion/chest) was upgraded to questionable and is now a game-time call.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 20, 2019
Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison are both questionable which, as Ian Rapoport notes, is an upgrade for Allison. Green Bay will need them with Davante Adams already out. If all three can’t go, Allen Lazard and Jake Kumerow are expected to be Aaron Rodgers’ top targets.
JUSTIN HOUSTON (IND) EXPECTED TO PLAY
#Colts DE Justin Houston, who tweaked his calf earlier in the week, is expected to play today, source said.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 20, 2019
Houston had his best game of the season against his former team last week. His presence will help against Deshaun Watson.
XAVIEN HOWARD (MIA) SHOULD RETURN
#Dolphins CB Xavien Howard, questionable with a knee injury in their game against the #Bills, is expected to play today, source said.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 20, 2019
We haven’t seen Howard since Week 4 against the Chargers. Every little bit helps in Miami’s bid to win as 17-point underdogs in Buffalo.
DARIUS SLAY (DET) EXPECTED TO PLAY
#Lions CB Darius Slay (hamstring) is expected to play today in an important game against the #Vikings, source said.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 20, 2019
That should elicit a big sigh of relief from Detroit fans since Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs are coming to town.
