32. ATLANTA FALCONS (1-6)
WEEK 7 RANK: 30
Last week, we suggested 30 might not be low enough for the Falcons. After a big loss to the Rams and ATS wins from the two teams behind them, the Falcons are in a league of their own. Now, the Falcons may have to turn to Matt Schaub if Matt Ryan’s ankle injury is serious enough. Things aren’t looking up in Atlanta.
31. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (2-5)
WEEK 7 RANK: 32
The Redskins entered Week 7 as our lowest ranked team and were facing our number-one team, the 49ers. Such an improbable cover should earn them more respect, right? Well, not quite. The weather was a huge equalizer and they came very close to not covering as 10-point underdogs in a 9-0 loss. Both of their covers (including the backdoor against Philadelphia) were nothing to get excited about.
30. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (2-5)
WEEK 7 RANK: 25
The Eagles follow two straight covers with two straight blowout losses. It’s becoming clear that their strengths are not good enough to overcome their flaws. Now they have to try to end their losing streak against the Bills, who are one of the top teams in our rankings.
29. MIAMI DOLPHINS (2-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 31
The Dolphins are on a roll! Two covers in a row! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. They’re still 14.5-point underdogs against the Steelers Monday night. At least they’ve finally looked somewhat competitive.
28. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (1-4-2)
WEEK 7 RANK: 28
With the second-lowest cover rate in the league, one could argue the Chargers belong as low as number 31. We can’t penalize them too much for two pushes, though. Just don’t expect to win any money when you bet on them.
27. NEW YORK GIANTS (2-5)
WEEK 7 RANK: 26
The return of Saquon Barkley did little to turn things around for the G-Men. They’ve now failed to cover in three straight. Next up is the Lions, who have covered in four of six games.
26. CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 27
The idle Browns move up a spot thanks to the ineptitude of those around them. It’s too bad that isn’t an option every week. Cleveland returns to play New England after they made the Jets look like amateurs. For what it’s worth, the Jets beat Cleveland 43-13 in Week 1.
25. BALTIMORE RAVENS (2-5)
WEEK 7 RANK: 29
The Ravens cover for the first time since their Week 1 blowout of the Dolphins. On top of that, it was never really close thanks to Lamar Jackson’s running and two defensive touchdowns. They’ll host the Patriots after their bye.
24. NEW YORK JETS (2-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 22
Last week, we introduced the Jets with “what a difference a week makes” after their upset of the Cowboys. The same introduction applies this week, but for different reasons. The narrative of Sam Darnold rejuvenating the Jets came to an end very quickly in an embarrassing Monday night loss. They’ll try to bounce back in Jacksonville against a Jaguars defense that forced four turnovers in Cincinnati.
23. CHICAGO BEARS (2-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 21
The Bears couldn’t possibly lose to the Saints, right? No Drew Brees and no Alvin Kamara against that defense? How will the Saints score? Very easily, as it turns out. Garbage time aside, the Saints dominated Chicago amidst a dreadful performance from Mitchell Trubisky. Though the Bears have failed to cover twice in a row, they do get to face a struggling Chargers team this week.
22. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (2-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 24
Like Cleveland, the Bucs get a boost by not playing. Unlike Cleveland, they have a decent matchup this week. The Titans haven’t covered since Week 4.
21. TENNESSEE TITANS (2-4-1)
WEEK 7 RANK: 23
Speaking of the Titans, they were fortunate to get out of their game with a push. They also scored more points than they did in their last two games combined, so we’ll call that progress.
20. CINCINNATI BENGALS (3-3)
WEEK 7 RANK: 20
The Bengals were well-positioned for a cover until things fell apart in the fourth quarter. Still, they have too many problems to list. The offensive line is so bad that Joe Mixon picked up an astonishing two yards on 10 carries. They’ll travel to London this week where they’re currently 13-point underdogs to the Rams.
19. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (3-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 16
It’s a statement that defies all logic, but it’s true: the Seahawks are struggling at home. Both of their losses (which weren’t close) happened in Seattle, as well as a too-close-for-comfort victory over the winless Bengals. At this point, they must be happy to get back on the road. They’re probably even happier to be facing the reeling Falcons.
18. DENVER BRONCOS (3-4)
WEEK 7 RANK: 15
It was always a little weird that Jacksonville was favored against New Orleans. It makes a bit more sense this week against the winless Bengals. Maybe they’ll handle their favored status a little better.
17. OAKLAND RAIDERS (3-3)
WEEK 7 RANK: 12
Last week, Kansas City nearly fell out of the top 10. This week, they’re out of the top half of the rankings. As we said with the Cowboys, you can’t keep losing straight-up as favorites and expect to do well in these ranks. The Chiefs have done so two weeks in a row and failed to cover the week before that as well. They’ll face Denver on Thursday night.
