NFL Betting: Dallas Cowboys Head Coaching Props

As we get set for the Thanksgiving Thursday games, it feels like Jason Garrett’s fate has been sealed. That’s because the Dallas Cowboys have shown time and time again this season that their ceiling is very limited. With losses in all four of their games against winning teams, it’s clear that this team won’t make the long playoff run that’s needed to keep him on the sidelines.

This time, it really does feel like a breaking point for Jerry Jones and that a new voice in the locker room is needed for the Cowboys – regardless if they a win or not over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday.

BetOnline.ag has posted props on whether Garrett will be back next season and who might possibly replace him. Let’s take a closer look at the lines.

WILL JASON GARRETT BE THE HEAD COACH OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS IN WEEK 1 OF 2020?

NO -500
YES +300

The odds seem finally stacked against Garrett. His struggles are rooted in a few common and continuous threads which have never left him in Dallas. First, the play-calling on offense has not been effective. The Cowboys didn’t run the ball enough with former offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who was fired and replaced by assistant coach Kellen Moore. This season, Moore has been criticized for passing the ball too little, even when quarterback Dak Prescott has gotten hot as a downfield thrower. Garrett just can’t find the play selection mix which works best for the Cowboys. Prescott actually leads the league in passing but that’s misleading. The passing game and the offense can seemingly disappear at a moment’s as it did against the New York Jets and New England Patriots.

The other big problem is that Garrett can lead the Cowboys to wins consistently in big games against good teams. Part of is the team but part of it is his conservative style. He kicked a field goal down 13-6 to the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter this past Sunday. A field goal obviously did not change the fact that the Cowboys, down 13-9, still needed a touchdown to win. Garrett’s offense was also timid and impotent in a 12-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints, which began the season’s downward spiral.

He will give himself a chance to stay on if he can both win the NFC East (which is a realistic goal, since the Philadelphia Eagles are 5-6 and a total mess on offense right now) and win the wild card game, most likely a home game against the Minnesota Vikings or the second-place team in the NFC West, the Seattle Seahawks or San Francisco 49ers. However, neither of those are givens. Anything short of accomplishing that and Garrett is a goner.

WHO WILL BE THE NEXT HEAD COACH OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS?

URBAN MEYER +300
JOSH MCDANIELS +400
LINCOLN RILEY +500
ROBERT SALEH +500

There is a massive list of names on the board but we’ll just take a look at a few of the favorites.

The Urban Meyer story seems overblown. Meyer has had health problems in the past and figures to return to college ball – if he does return to coaching anywhere. Josh McDaniels is an intriguing choice as he’d get to takeover a fairly competent team; this isn’t a rebuild. Jerry Jones might give him a chance, given McDaniels’ continued success with the New England Patriots. Lincoln Riley is not likely to leave Oklahoma where he has a good thing going.

The favorite to some is Robert Saleh, the 49ers’ excellent defensive coordinator, but he’s not the sexy name that Jones will be looking for. He figures to get a shot at a high-profile NFL head coaching job.
