And then there were four.
The Heisman Trophy race is down to its last two games and there are just four players left on the board. Each of the contestants will be playing this weekend and will have a big national television spotlight. One player has a cushion in this race and doesn’t have to dazzle; the other three on this list have to max out and shoot for the stars. It is not hard to figure out which is which.
JOE BURROW, LSU TIGERS
ODDS TO WIN: -3000
LAST WEEK’S ODDS: -2000
The LSU quarterback has thrown for 41 touchdowns against six interceptions. He has thrown for over 4,000 passing yards with over 290 completions. He has also rushed for 239 yards and three scores. Burrow was 23 of 28 for 327 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions this past Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks, and has pretty much sealed the award at this point. An injury could get in the way or a bad performance against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. Two incredible performances by his Ohio State pursuers – Chase Young and Justin Fields – could also make things interesting. However, the Burrow candidacy has a very large margin for error, and everyone else has no margin for error. Burrow can afford a modest performance. His pursuers have to be virtually perfect the rest of the way.
JUSTIN FIELDS, OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
ODDS TO WIN: +800
LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +1000
The Ohio State quarterback has thrown for 33 touchdowns and only one interception, over 2,350 passing yards and 69 percent completions. He has also compiled 445 rushing yards with 10 rushing touchdowns.
This week, Fields plays No. 10 Michigan this week in what will be Ohio State’s biggest game of the year. After Ohio State scored only 28 points against Penn State and after Fields fumbled at the goal line in that game, he needs to go off to have any chance of catching Joe Burrow. An “okay” game won’t cut it.
CHASE YOUNG, OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
ODDS TO WIN: +1400
LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +2000
The Ohio State pass rusher terrorized the Penn State Nittany Lions’ offensive line for multiple sacks this past weekend. He now has 16.5 sacks for the season and that’s with two games he missed due to concerns about NCAA eligibility.
Young was the best player on the field against Penn State, a high-profile opponent in a game which got big TV ratings. He’ll now play Michigan in another huge TV-magnet game and if he can do well against them, then dominate in the Big Ten Championship Game in prime time on December 7, he could potentially make Joe Burrow sweat a little bit. He probably is the second choice for the award, even though Fields currently has higher odds at the moment.
JALEN HURTS, OKLAHOMA SOONERS
ODDS TO WIN: +2000
LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +900
The Oklahoma quarterback has thrown for 30 touchdowns and six interceptions, completing 71 percent of passes, notching over 3,180 passing yards. Hurts has also put together 1,156 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. He’s greatly damaged his Heisman chances because he committed two turnovers inside the TCU 10-yard line this past weekend. Those two turnovers were the main reasons Oklahoma almost lost. A 97-yard interception of Hurts was returned by TCU for a touchdown and he also lost a fumble at the goal line for the second straight week.
Those are damaging moments for a player who has been relatively ordinary over the past few weeks. Also: Texas lost again to Baylor, meaning that Oklahoma’s win over Texas, in which Hurts played well, is being further diminished.
