The arbitrary NFL rankings continue…
12. TENNESSEE TITANS (7-5)
Ryan Tannehill might want to start looking at houses to buy in the Nashville area. He’s not going anywhere.
13. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (7-5)
For all the crap Mike Tomlin has gotten in his coaching tenure, and much of it’s deserved, this is the best job he’s ever done and this time might not make the playoffs.
14. CHICAGO BEARS (6-6)
This is what happens when you screw up on your quarterback pick. Imagine Patrick Mahomes playing with this defense. No reason not to start over in 2020 if you’ve got the shot at somebody good in the draft, Bears.
15. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS(6-6)
Jacoby Brissett is one of the best back up quarterbacks in the NFL and will have a long and lucrative career because of that. He’s not a starter and it’s beginning to be a problem.
16. OAKLAND RAIDERS (6-6)
All the promise of the early season seems to be eroding as the Raiders become the team we all thought they’d be after a dumpster fire of a preseason.
17. DALLAS COWBOYS (6-6)
This will be the best open job in the NFL when the team finally loads Jason Garrett into the nearest catapult and pulls the lever.
18. CLEVELAND BROWNS (5-7)
Speaking of good jobs that should come open. Sure, it’s Cleveland, but imagine what a real coach could do with these players. Now, imagine how disappointed Browns fans will be when they hire Mike McCarthy.
19. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-7)
The Bucs aren’t playing for anything other than showing Bruce Arians knows what he’s doing and Jameis Winston hasn’t got a clue.
20. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (5-7)
The Eagles’ problems are fixable and there’s no reason to make wholesale changes to a team that won the Super Bowl two years ago. But this will not be the offseason to screw around. Especially if Dallas brings in a real coach.
21. CAROLINA PANTHERS (5-7)
Of all the teams that could have fired coaches in the midst of the season, the Panthers are the only squad that is worse for it.
22. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (4-8)
Anthony Lynn better hope Ron Rivera doesn’t want to come back to Los Angeles. Or that he has no desire to move to London when that shoe drops.
23. DENVER BRONCOS (4-8)
If the Broncos are smart, they’ll go ahead shut operations down so they’ll have a shot at one of the top quarterbacks this year. You pick a guy until you’ve got a guy.
24. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (4-8)
Speaking of having a guy, the Jags are a team that could blow the whole thing up in the offseason, or ride out this Doug Marrone – Gardner Minshew thing for another year. Believe it or not, I’m in the latter camp. I think this is a team that could get good, fast. Especially with double first round picks over the next two seasons.
25. ATLANTA FALCONS (3-9)
There’s no chance at this point that Dan Quinn can save his job. He can only try to do as much damage to the NFC South as he leaves.
26. MIAMI DOLPHINS (3-9)
The only problem with the Dolphins’ plan to tank on purpose is that so many AFC teams tanked on accident.
27. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (3-9)
Here’s the real question when it comes to the upcoming Redskins coaching search; who the hell wants to coach there?
28. NEW YORK JETS (4-8)
Adam Gase has eaten a lot of crap this season, but how good are these Jets really supposed to be? Did anybody have them contending this year? And if you did, can you tell me where you got the stuff you were smoking at the time?
29. ARIZONA CARDINALS (3-8-1)
Are things building in Arizona? It’s tough to tell. They could be way better than last year and no one would know because every other team in their division is a buzzsaw. Either way, Kliff Kingsbury is safe for now.
30. DETROIT LIONS (3-8-1)
In my Bad Coach Power Rankings, make no mistake, Matt Patricia is an honorable mention and my limiting the list to five is the only reason he wasn’t on it.
31. CINCINNATI BENGALS (1-11)
The Red Rifle delivers the team’s first and only win this season. He keeps the embarrassment of an 0-16 campaign off the books, but doesn’t mess up their shot at drafting his replacement. Andy Dalton is the real MVP.
32. NEW YORK GIANTS (2-10)
Pat Shurmur is handing the keys back to Eli Manning for at least a week and suddenly this Eagles game on Monday night got a lot more interesting. Is what ESPN wishes I would write. Either way, get ready for the Eli packages, the montages, the Super Bowl trophy hoistings. Somebody is working on their Emmy reel with this one.
