The Carolina Panthers fired coach Ron Rivera earlier this week. With such a dearth of quality coaches in the NFL, it’s likely that a guy like Rivera – who led the Panthers to a Super Bowl and the playoffs in four of the last seven seasons – won’t be out of work for long.
BetOnline.ag has posted some Ron Rivera odds and he’s clearly favored to be a head coach in the NFL next year. The question is where will he land?
ODDS OF HEAD COACHING IN 2020: -160
ODDS OF NOT BEING A HEAD COACH: +120
Rivera was fired in Carolina because the team became unglued this season. They started 4-2 and fell apart, and new owner David Tepper simply didn’t have the patience. In fairness, a home loss to the Washington Redskins last week indicated that there were bigger problems than the team simply missing Cam Newton.
Carolina has had their issues this year but most are quite fixable. Their run defense has been surprisingly terrible (worst in the NFL in yards-per-carry allowed) and the offense has struggled with Kyle Allen under center. However, under Rivera’s watch, this team never really had bad years. The worst they’ve ever done is a six-win campaign, so it’s not as if the bottom has ever fallen out. Teams like the Cleveland Browns will tell you that things can get much worse. At the same time, the Panthers felt like it was time for a change. Rivera is gone and now they can get a jump on their coaching search.
POSSIBLE 2020 TEAM: CLEVELAND BROWNS
Speaking of the Browns, Rivera is probably the perfect hire for a team like that. They have plenty of talent but lack discipline. Rivera, who is first-known as a defensive coach, has plenty of parts to work with the Browns defense while he could bring over a guy like Norv Turner to steady the offense.
The Browns haven’t had a winning season since 2007 and they registered just four wins between 2015-2017. Hiring a guy who has a proven track record, can instill some discipline and will bring some stability to the franchise should be a very attractive prospect.
POSSIBLE 2020 TEAM: WASHINGTON REDSKINS
The Redskins canned Jay Gruden earlier this year and could also using a steadying voice. The challenge in Washington is a meddlesome owner who often gets in the way of what the head coach wants to do. In Carolina, Rivera had free reign, for the most part, and worked well with the front office to get what he needed. Washington has a tendency of handcuffing their coaches and Rivera might like that.
If owner Daniel Snyder did agree to stay out of the way, Rivera would make sense. Washington has decent parts on defense, a good running game and a quarterback prospect. That’s plenty for Rivera to work with.
POSSIBLE 2020 TEAM: DALLAS COWBOYS
The Cowboys should probably make a guy like Rivera their top target but probably aren’t going to. The issue is owner Jerry Jones likes to make a splash and Rivera isn’t exactly a sexy name. Some college coaches will get a look like Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley and if pro coaches are considered, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh might be top choice. If those options fall through, however, and the Redskins and Browns can’t secure Rivera, he would be their next choice.
