After Sugar Bowl Loss, Rhule Favored To Be Next New York Giants Head Coach

The New York Giants are in search of a new head coach and Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is among the favorites. After his team lost in the Sugar Bowl to Georgia, will Rhule decide to make the jump?
Let’s take a closer look at the coaches favored to land the New York Giants job. They’re on the hunt for a replacement after canning Pat Shurmur.
MATT RHULE
ODDS: +200
It is true that Rhule is a very in-demand head coach whose name is circulating a lot. He has undeniably put himself at the top of a lot of teams’ lists with his work at Baylor. However, Rhule could have gotten jobs in the college game which were sexier and more attractive than Baylor. That in itself was a decision which cut against the conventional wisdom, so if Rhule wanted the Baylor job, does he want to leave it this quickly for an NFL job?
The other factor here is the expectations were at an all-time low at Baylor and Rhule could take over and take his time (he still can). Everything he’s doing is appreciated. The Giants job will put him in the Big Apple, which is a pressure cooker. He’ll have to deliver right away – whether he has the parts or not. It’s unclear whether he’d want that role.
JOSH MCDANIELS
ODDS: +500
The McDaniels candidacy is a legitimate one as it seems like he’s finally open to leaving the Patriots. McDaniels has spent so many years as an offensive coordinator and so many seasons with both Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. That association alone is enough to make him among the hottest commodities.
His first go-round with the Denver Broncos was a disaster, but McDaniels was young and a lot less proven back then. It’s questionable how much he’s learned, though, as you might recall that he took the Indianapolis Colts job briefly and then pulled out at the last second just a couple of years ago. That was an embarrassing episode.
McDaniels might find this job attractive as he’s actually got some parts to work with. Guys like Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard could form a decent offense. The cupboard is bare on defense but at least McDaniels would have a good shot to make something of the offense.
ROBERT SALEH
ODDS: +700
This is another really good choice, a candidate who appears ready to get a deserved chance at an NFL head coaching gig. Saleh has done excellent work as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers this season as his unit finished second in the NFL in yards allowed and eighth in points. The quality of his work, and the fact that he has worked alongside a brilliant young coach, Kyle Shanahan, will make a number of NFL teams convinced that Saleh has what it takes to build a strong defense and identify a good offensive coordinator. The Giants actually need help on the defensive side, so if he was paired with a good offensive coordinator and Saleh fixed the defense, this team might be back in the range of .500 next season.
DON MARTINDALE
ODDS: +900
The defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens is getting noticed in coaching carousel evaluations. The Ravens sent 12 players to the Pro Bowl this season, so the Ravens’ staff is naturally a central focus of other teams’ coaching searches. It’s a unit that struggled early on but after they got Jimmy Smith back and acquired Marcus Peters, they shot up the ranks. They coughed up 25.0 points per game in their first four contests but gave up just 15.1 the rest of the way. The Giants need help on that side of the ball, so that could lead them to look at Martindale.
