Bears Have Options But Trubisky Favored To Be Chicago Bears Starting Quarterback In 2020

The Chicago Bears are one season removed from being a 12-4 team. Last year, they fell back to the pack and second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky regressed. Now the Bears have to make some decisions as to whether they’ll stick with him in 2020 or go in a different direction. Trubisky is favored to be the starter but will the Bears bring him back as their lead passer? The early signs all point to ‘Yes’.

WILL MITCHELL TRUBISKY BE THE CHICAGO BEARS’ STARTING QB IN WEEK 1 OF 2020?

YES -500
NO +300

The Bears have already indicated that they plan to stick with Trubisky but in fairness, what else are they going to say? He’s entering the third year of his NFL career and could take a leap forward. He’s not costing the team much, so they can carry him without him being a huge burden. They could easily draft someone else or bring in a veteran to compete with him and see how it plays out.

The Bears invested a lot in Trubisky. The franchise and its current management staked their reputation on the bet that Trubisky would be an elite quarterback in the same class as Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. While that doesn’t seem likely at all, the Bears probably don’t want to give up on Trubisky just yet. That means giving him the 2020 season as a prove-it year.

CAM NEWTON

The Carolina Panthers have a new head coach, Matt Rhule, and a new offensive coordinator, Joe Brady. They might seek a new vision and path for the team. Given that Newton has been significantly injured in recent years and is simply not the quarterback he once was when he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl, it is entirely realistic for Carolina to move in a new direction and tell Newton he needs to find another team. If that is the case, Chicago could certainly find Newton an intriguing option, one compelling enough to either ditch Trubisky or at least create a quarterback battle in camp, with the two players possibly entering a quarterback shuffle during the 2020 season.

MARCUS MARIOTA

It is plain that Marcus Mariota needs a fresh start. Unlike Newton, he will definitely begin the 2020 season by playing for a team other than the one he played for in 2019. It is merely a question of which team he will represent. The Bears have a solid defense, so Mariota would not be expected to totally transform the offense. If he could merely provide steadier, more reliable production compared to Trubisky, the Bears would have a much better chance of contending in the NFC. This scenario – Mariota to the Bears – is not unreasonable.

PHILIP RIVERS

Although it looks like Rivers is heading to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Bears could also be a great option for him. After all, they’re basically a quarterback away from being a serious contender in the NFC. Rivers is a strong leader and has a competitive spirit; that’s what the Bears need. Sure, he’s a little turnover prone but Trubisky is too. On the other hand, the upside is much higher with someone like Rivers. The Bears aren’t going anywhere with Trubisky at the helm.
