The NFL offseason is in its first month, which means the NFL Combine can’t be too far away. The intrigue begins on Feb. 23, and when the combine arrives, that means lots of tests of athletes’ physical skills and capacities. The sprints and running-based exercises are the centerpieces of the event. Let’s see what is worth exploring in the final week of February:
ANYONE BREAKS JOHN ROSS’ 40 RECORD OF 4.22
NO -1000
YES +500
It is unlikely for anyone to break this extremely impressive record. Ross went above and beyond when the receiver out of the University of Washington made history at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine. The Cincinnati Bengals were impressed enough to take Ross and give him a chance to join their receiver corps alongside A.J. Green. Will anyone eventually break this record? Maybe, but is that a chance one wants to take as a bettor? There are other more reasonable options, more spots in which to hedge a bet or find better value. This doesn’t seem like the place to make a big wager on history.
FASTEST 20-YARD SHUTTLE
FASTER THAN 3.88 SECONDS: -120
SLOWER THAN 3.88 SECONDS: -120
The quality of athletes in the combine can be viewed in many different ways, but one way to view the combine is to consider how many players from the national championship game between Clemson and LSU are in the combine. LSU has lost a very large number of players from its national championship team, a 15-0 squad which just produced one of the most amazing seasons in the history of college football. There is a decent chance that one LSU player, or perhaps a Clemson Tiger if not an LSU Tiger, can deliver a 20-yard shuttle time which will be lower than the 3.88 mark.
FASTEST 3-CONE DRILL
SLOWER THAN 6.47 SECONDS: -150
FASTER THAN 6.47 SECONDS: +110
If you are a believer in the claim that the non-dash events (this being one of them) are more likely to set particularly impressive times than the 40-yard dash, you should once again bet on the faster time here. This isn’t just the Clemson-LSU angle, but also a recognition that the other especially strong teams in college football from last season – Ohio State being one, and Oregon being another – have a physical freak who is going to go wild in the 3-cone drill and blow the scouts away with a new range of prowess and dexterity. People weighing in on these props have to pick their spots. The 3-cone might be a spot where something new and exciting could happen, opening the eyes of the NFL community.
FASTEST 40 TIME
FASTER THAN 4.29 SECONDS: -125
SLOWER THAN 4.29 SECONDS: -115
It is unlikely to expect a time below 4.22 seconds, but this is where – in keeping with the theme of picking spots – one could find value. If someone gets a 4.27, that could cash in. A fast Alabama receiver could do this. A fast LSU receiver could do this. An Ohio State running back could do this. There are several sources of a potential threat to John Ross’ record, and they don’t have to break his record to win this prop. This might be another good place to expect a faster time than the one listed in the prop.
