8 Best Tier 3 Edge Rushers Hitting the Market This Offseason Part 2

BY ADAM GREENE

We’ve got financial advisors and guys with Super Bowl rings showing up in Part 2 as we roll through Nos. 3-5 on the list.

3. CARL NASSIB, OLB/DE, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

2019: 34 tackles, eight for a loss, six sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery

Everyone’s favorite Hard Knocks investment analyst makes his appearance on the list after two solid seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nassib has flourished as a situational pass rusher in the Bucs’ system and has likely maxed out his talent. If he’s followed his own advice, he might not need to hang around the NFL too much longer before he can buy his own Gulfstream G650.

With Nassib, you know what you’re going to get as a coach. A good teammate and a smart guy that can harass the quarterback, but he’s not giving you full-time, double digit output.

Where he should end up: Dallas Cowboys

Tampa is currently running a 3-4 and I’m not sure how good that fits Nassib’s skillset. The Cowboys are losing a starter and a back up defensive end in free agency this season and Nassib can hold down the fort in either role as they draft and develop or work free agency to get a solid starter opposite DeMarcus Lawrence.

4. BRUCE IRVIN, OLB, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

2019: 36 tackles, eight for a loss, 8.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one pass defended

Irvin has been an underrated pro for a long time. Overlooked as a member of the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl teams, he’s put up pretty much these numbers everywhere he’s been since. This season was on par for the course for Irvin so you know exactly what you’ll get when you sign the 32-year old pass rusher.

Where he should end up: Carolina Panthers

Just like the guy we opened with, Mario Addison, the Panthers need to keep their current pass rushers in place. There’s no reason to go into a complete rebuild in Carolina with (hopefully) Cam Newton healthy and ready to play. Irvin and Addison were a solid team last year and won’t cost a lot to keep. You shouldn’t break up the band.

5. MICHAEL BENNETT, DE, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

2019: 32 tackles, 14 for a loss, 6.5 sacks

While Irvin might have been consistently underrated in his time with the Seahawks, Michael Bennett never had that trouble. Make no mistake, Bennett is a good, solid player, but the way pundits and analysts talked about him he was Seattle’s answer to J.J. Watt in spite of never once putting up anywhere near those kinds of numbers.

The highest sack total Bennett achieved in his 11-year career is 10 in 2015. He’s single digits the rest of the way. What he’s excellent at is run coverage and run support as his consistent tackles for a loss numbers tell you.

Where he should end up: Indianapolis Colts

Back when I wrote up my Tier 1 countdown, I had Yannick Ngakoue going to the Colts. Since the Jacksonville Jaguars franchised him, that’s not happening. Indy unquestionably needs pass rusher help and should look for it in the draft and sign the best free agents available as they can afford pretty much anything with the second most available cap money in the NFL. Bennett can start or come in as an effective back up and would upgrade everything they put on the field last year immediately.
