“Shogun” and “The Bear” Lead the Way at the 76th Emmys

“Shogun” and “The Bear” Lead the Way at the 76th Emmys

It’s the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards and leading all programs with 25 nominations is “Shogun”

after its first season. On the comedy side, it’s all about “The Bear” once again. Between

“Shogun” and “The Bear” alone FX is having a huge year and may need a U-Haul to carry all of

their awards. Let’s take a look at a few key categories.

Comedy Series

This is “The Bear’s” category to lose. Remember, this edition of the awards show is based on

the second season of the hit FX series which originally aired in June of 2023. With 23

nominations this time around, it breaks the 22-nomination record for a comedy series held by

“30 Rock” from back in 2009. There is a good chance that they also surpass their own record for

most wins by a comedy series in a single year with 10 last year.

Both ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” HBO/Max’s “Hacks” have played second fiddle to first “Ted

Lasso” and then “The Bear” for the last few years but could this be the year that one of these

two bridesmaids go from perennial contender to Emmy award winner?

Drama Series

FX’s highly acclaimed drama “Shogun” is the odds on favorite to take home the network’s first

drama series victory. That being said, it’s not as much of a done deal as you may think. With

other first season shows such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith making a push there is also the final

season of Netflix’s monarchy drama “The Crown” making noise.

Many analysts have pointed to the precedent set by Season 8 of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”,

which won in this category at the 2019 Emmy awards despite being universally panned. Could

we see some voters cast ballots with rose colored glasses rather than seeing the final season of

“The Crown” for what it really was?

Comedy Actor

Jeremy Allen White is the favorite to repeat as the winner in this category for his performance as

Carmen “Carmy” Berazatto in “The Bear”. The only thing that could hamper a victory for White,

is if voters skew their view and forget they’re voting for Season 2 and not the mix reviewed

Season 3. Scene stealer Matt Berry of “What We Do In The Shadows” has made a late push to

dethrone his fellow FX actor and is definitely worth a second look on the board.

Comedy Actress

Both Jean Smart and Ayo Edebiri are the two leading favorites in this category with Smart

having taken home the statuette for Lead Comedy Actress already twice before for her role in

“Hacks”. Edebiri did win an Emmy last year but that was in the supporting category for her work

as Sydney in “The Bear”. That being said, “Abbott Elementary’s” Quinta Brunson is the 2023

Lead Comedy Actress winner and does have a shot at a repeat this year as well. It’s the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards and leading all programs with 25 nominations is “Shogun”
