5 Best Bets To Win The AL CY Young Award

If a pitcher wants to win the AL CY Young award, then they have to put together quite the statistical season. They need to have strong numbers in the ERA, strikeouts and innings pitched departments along with some other things including team success. We got to see the Toronto Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray win the award last season. Let’s take a look at five of the best bets to win the award in 2022.

5. Lance Lynn

The Chicago White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn isn’t at all a favorite to win the award. He is actually listed a little further down the rankings but there seems to be some solid value on betting for him. The 34-year-old player had a poor end to his 2021 campaign but not bad enough to drop him down the voting for this award. He ended in third place last season; it was the third straight year that he finished in the top-six as well. Lynn may be a little behind on the rest of the competition but he is certainly somebody to keep an eye on.

4. Lucas Giolito

Yes, another White Sox player. Lucas Giolito had put together back-to-back strong seasons in 2019 and then in 2020. Everybody started to anticipate the pitcher taking yet another step forward in his development to the point where he could win the AL CY Young. However, he regressed a small bit in 2021. He was 11th in voting for this award at the end of the year but his sights are set on improving once again. Some projections have Giolito becoming a top three pitcher in the league next year.

3. Shane Bieber

Shane Bieber took a small step backwards in 2021. The 2020 AL CY Young winner wasn’t able to play nearly as much as he would like to last season. He got just 16 starts in total by the end of the year. However, this is a man with a 2.92 ERA over his last three seasons combined. If the only thing standing in his way is availability, then we could certainly see Bieber put up numbers that are going to be good enough to win the award.

2. Robbie Ray

The Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Robbie Ray is coming off of a phenomenal season. He isn’t the favorite to win the award at the moment but his stats really speak for themselves. At the end of last season, he ended with a 2.84 ERA across 193.1 total innings. On top of that, he led the entire league in strikeouts forced with 248, more than the player with the best odds at winning the AL Cy Young. Ray was so good last season that it’s hard to imagine him seriously regressing. It looks like the Blue Jays star is going to continue to improve and take another leap in his overall play in 2022.

1. Gerrit Cole

For most, seeing Gerrit Cole atop the odds in the AL isn’t surprising. The New York Yankees ace has been consistently great the last couple of years. He has finished in the top-five in voting the past few seasons now and this could finally be the time that he wins the award. After all, he did finish second this past season, right behind Ray. Cole ended that year with a 16-8 overall record and 243 strikeouts to go along with it. Cole
