AL MVP Odds Show Trout Expected To Win Again

Mike Trout is the defending American League MVP and has won the award in three of the last six seasons. With the Los Angeles Angels finally bolstering the lineup behind him, it’s no surprise that Trout is favored to win the award again. Is he a good bet to win it back-to-back – something that hasn’t been done since Miguel Cabrera did it in 2012 and 2013? Let’s take a closer look at the AL MVP odds.

MIKE TROUT, LOS ANGELES ANGELS
MVP ODDS: +100

The best position player (non-pitcher) in baseball has to be the favorite for the American League MVP award. This doesn’t mean Trout is a lock to win, only that he is the most likely winner. How can it not be? Trout often threatens to win the Triple Crown. He is at or near the top of the list in home runs, batting average, and RBI in most seasons. He has a great eye for the strike zone. He gets walked a lot, so he is going to score plenty of runs. A big key this season is that Trout’s team, the Los Angeles Angels, acquired Anthony Rendon in the offseason. Rendon was a World Series hero for the Washington Nationals. He will give Trout protection in the Angels’ batting order, something Trout has needed for some time. Trout did not get a lot of protection from Albert Pujols, because the aging slugger is well past his prime and is not the force he once was with the St. Louis Cardinals. Because Pujols hasn’t been able to protect Trout, the Halo slugger has not been able to be quite as dominant as he could be. With Rendon in the Los Angeles batting order, Trout should be better. This is why he has rightly been installed as a heavy favorite.

AARON JUDGE, NEW YORK YANKEES
MVP ODDS: +1200

The reason to think Judge will bust out and be the AL MVP is that he is healthy. He wasn’t healthy last season. Judge, though, plays good defense, runs well, and can take advantage of Yankee Stadium’s short dimensions down the foul lines to hit over 50 home runs. If Judge can stay healthy for a full season, it is reasonable to think he can hit over 50 home runs. If he does that, he will surely be in the top two of the MVP race. Only Trout might be able to overtake him. That is the optimistic scenario for Judge this year.

ALEX BREGMAN, HOUSTON ASTROS
MVP ODDS: +1600

The dynamic infielder for the Houston Astros is able to hit over 40 home runs while getting on base, hitting for average, and being a catalyst for one of the most explosive offenses in baseball. Bregman isn’t the power hitter Trout and Judge are, but he is – like Trout – a very complete player who does everything well and offers so much support to a team in so many different ways. Bregman will once again get the chance to stand out from the crowd in a loaded Houston lineup. The one big cautionary note about his candidacy, however: The hatred of the Astros for cheating might prevent voters from voting for Bregman, even if his numbers are the best of the best.

FRANCISCO LINDOR, CLEVELAND INDIANS
MVP ODDS: +1600

The shortstop for the Cleveland Indians had a disappointing 2019 season, as did the Indians as a whole. Cleveland missed the playoffs, which is very rare for the team in modern times. Lindor will have motivation on his side. It could catapult him to a huge bounce-back season and a shot at the MVP award if Trout is injured or even slightly below his peak.
