Game Changer: Trades and Transactions

With the 2019 MLB Draft all wrapped up, managers and front offices have been getting back to focusing on their active rosters. With trade rumors flying and the season starting to settle in on players, let’s take a look at some of the biggest moves and changes that are likely to have an impact on the outcome of games.

CRAIG KIMBREL TO THE CUBS

In probably the biggest non-draft news of the week, it seems as though the right-handed reliever’s long stint in free agency is finally coming to an end, as he’s expected to finalize a three-year deal with the Chicago Cubs. Kimbrel’s absence from the mound thus far in 2019 has been a surprise to some, especially after becoming the youngest and faster player to ever record 300 saves just last year.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are having a good season after a bit of a choppy start. No doubt they will get great value out of the closer, who will likely become an impact player as soon as he’s officially signed.

MCCUTCHEN OUT FOR REST OF 2019

Bad news for the 5th-place overall Philadelphia Phillies, as former NL MVP OF Andrew McCutchen is reported to be out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL. He got caught up in a rundown between first and second on Monday night against the San Diego Padres.

McCutchen’s absence will leave a major hole on the Phillies’ bench, and could have a serious effect on their prospects of winning their first NL East title in 8 years. Expect the Phillies’ odds to take a hit after this one, and use it to your advantage.

JAY BRUCE PICKED UP FROM SEATTLE

Sometimes, bad news comes with some good news, and while the Phillies will certainly struggle without McCutchen, in a stroke of good luck, just the day prior, they finalized a deal to acquire Jay Bruce from the Seattle Mariners.

The exact terms of the deal haven’t been made public, but the rumor is that the Mariners will likely be receiving a minor league player along with some cash considerations in return for the veteran outfielder. Bruce’s bat has been fairly quiet this year, and the move will add some depth to the Phillies’ bench, while freeing up some money for Seattle.

CARLOS CARRASCO LANDS ON INDEFINITE IL

Cleveland was dealt a blow yesterday as chronically out-of-luck RHP Carlos Carrasco is headed to the injured list with what the team is describing as a “blood condition”. No word on what that might be, but the team has him listed as being out indefinitely. Carrasco has had a string of unfortunate turns, undergoing both heart and Tommy John surgeries, not to mention having a couple of close calls with line drives.

The Cleveland pitching staff is in pretty serious trouble, with Corey Kluber already being out with a broken arm, and Mike Clevinger out with a back issue. Including Carrasco, that makes a total of 7 pitchers on the IL for Cleveland. In the case of Carrasco with the quite frankly scary-sounding blood condition, let’s sincerely hope that it’s only Cleveland’s odds prospects that are in any real danger.
