Hunter Greene Makes History as Cincinnati Continues to Flounder

Flame-throwing right-hander Hunter Greene made a bit of ignominious history on Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Greene didn’t allow a hit through 7.1 innings of work, and the Cincinnati Reds ended up holding the Pirates hitless. However, the Reds lost the game 1-0 to the Pirates, as they continue to find new ways to embarrass themselves. That has led to chants of “Sell the team, Bob!” echoing throughout Cincinnati, and the Reds are the only team in baseball that has yet to win 10 games.

Hunter Greene took the loss in stride. He was definitely excited to make it to The Show, but he is playing with a lot of Quad-A players, and he might be thinking he’d rather be down on the farm right now. Cincinnati had a fire sale and dealt most of its best players prior to the 2022 season, as Bob Castellini is doing his best Rachel Phelps impersonation.

Other Five Teams to Lose a No Hitter

Cincinnati Reds 1, Houston Colt .45s 0 (April 23, 1964)

Only one National League team had previously lost a game while holding its opponent hitless. Cincinnati was on the winning side that time, as Pete Rose scored in the ninth inning to lead the Reds past the Houston Colt .45s. Houston committed two errors in the final inning, so Ken Johnson lost the game despite throwing a no-hitter through nine frames.

Detroit Tigers 2, Baltimore Orioles 1 (April 30, 1967)

Steve Barber had a one-run lead to work with in the ninth inning before Detroit scored two runs to deal Baltimore with a bitter defeat. Barber didn’t allow a hit, but he walked the first two batters in the final inning, and then a wild pitch and an error allowed the game-winning runs to score.

Chicago White Sox 4, New York Yankees 0 (July 1, 1990)

The most lopsided no hitter loss came in 1990 as the wind off Lake Michigan wreaked havoc with the New York Yankees’ fielders. Chicago scored four unearned runs off three errors in the eighth inning, leading to Andy Hawkins getting a loss despite holding the White Sox without a hit through eight innings of work.

Cleveland Indians 2, Boston Red Sox 1 (April 12, 1992)

Matt Young struggled with his control throughout his otherwise strong performance against the Cleveland Indians early in the 1992 season. Young ended up walking seven batters, allowing Cleveland to score the two runs that the team needed to topple the Boston Red Sox. He threw 120 pitches in that game, and his year didn’t get any better as he failed to secure a win in eight starts that season.

Los Angeles Dodgers 1, Los Angeles Angels 0 (June 28, 2008)

The only other team to lose after no hitting its opponent in the last three decades was the Los Angeles Angels. Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo teamed up to shut down the cross-town Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Angels lost 1-0.

Bonus Content: Harvey Haddix

Harvey Haddix had one of the most dominant performances we’ve ever seen from a pitcher on May 26, 1959. Haddix threw a perfect game through 12 innings against the Milwaukee Braves before allowing a home run after an error in the 13th inning. His Pittsburgh Pirates had 12 hits in the game, but they failed to plate a run and dealt Haddix the most undeserving loss in MLB history.
