Red Hot Atlanta Braves Host New York Mets

Although the team hasn’t reached the levels of domination seen during the Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz era the Atlanta Braves are looking extremely tough as Major League Baseball enters the second half of June. Atlanta has won 9 of their last 10 games and are now 2.5 games clear of the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League East. The Braves will look to improve their record in divisional play on Monday as the host the New York Mets at SunTrust Park.

The Mets have been extremely mediocre this season. They’re currently three games under the .500 mark at 34-37 and are in third place in the division 7.5 games back and just one game ahead of the fourth place Washington Nationals. New York is 5-5 in their last ten games and are coming off a Sunday 4-3 home loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets biggest problem this year has been their play on the road. They’ve been decent at home with a record of 20-14 but are just 14-23 away from home. Not surprisingly, that has translated into some hefty losses for bettors. New York is now -10 units on the road this year which isn’t good since they’re essentially at ‘break even’ in most other situations. Only 5 teams have lost more money this year than the Mets (-10.8 units overall).

Zack Wheeler gets the start for the Mets and he’s a good pitcher enduring a miserable year. He’s got a 4.87 ERA overall and the Mets have split his 14 starts. On the road, New York has lost 5 of his 7 starts and Wheeler’s ERA is a woeful 5.48. New York has won two of Wheeler’s last three assignments though his ERA in those games is 5.78. Wheeler’s biggest problem this season has been giving up home runs. To date, he’s allowed 13 home runs in 88 2/3 innings. Last year, he allowed just 14 home runs in 188 1/3 innings of work. He’s also going to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and he’s been the subject of countless trade rumors of late. That might not explain away his struggles this season but it sure doesn’t help his focus.

Atlanta will start 21 year old right hander Mike Soroka who has quickly become a monster in the Braves rotation. The Calgary, Alberta native has a 7-1 record with the Braves going 8-3 in his starts along with a 1.92 ERA. He’s been helped by the Braves offense and Atlanta has won his last three assignments. Last time out against Pittsburgh, he wasn’t particularly impressive allowing 10 hits and giving up 5 earned runs but the team scrapped out an 8-7 win. He hasn’t faced the Mets this season but did so twice early in the 2018 campaign and was flat out dominant–in 12 1/3 innings of work he allowed a single earned run and just 7 hits while striking out 9 and walking 1. The Braves won both games. He’s only gotten better since then which is bad news for the Mets here. A look at the MLB baseball lines suggests that he’s no longer a secret but it won’t be too much longer until you’re laying -200 or more anytime he takes the hill at home.
