2022 Big Ten Tournament Betting Odds

The No. 1 seed has only won the Big Ten Tournament once since 2015. That was in 2019 when Michigan State knocked off Michigan to hold serve, and the Spartans and Wolverines have been fixtures here as of late. However, both programs have struggled this year, so we could see a fresh face win this year’s automatic bid from the Big Ten. Iowa hasn’t won the conference tournament since 2006, and Purdue hasn’t won this event since 2009.

The 2022 Big Ten Tournament will run from March 9-13 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Illinois and Wisconsin finished tied atop the conference standings in the regular season, but Purdue is favored to win just its second Big Ten conference championship.

Purdue has the best offense in the country according to Ken Pomeroy. The Boilermakers have depth, and they can come at you in waves, giving them a distinct advantage over opponents. Jaden Ivey was one of the top players in the Big Ten this season, averaging 17.2 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 3.0 APG. Center Zach Edey is tough for opponents to match up against at 7’4, and he averaged 14.7 PPG and 7.6 RPG while making 66.7% of his field goals. Additionally, six players for Purdue are making at least 40% of their threes, and the Boilermakers rank third nationally in three-point percentage.

Center Kofi Cockburn is a semifinalist for the Wooden Award, and he has been the catalyst for Illinois’ success again this year. The Fighting Illini lost Ayo Dosunmu to the NBA, but Cockburn has kept them competitive by averaging 21.0 PPG and 10.6 RPG. Alfonso Plummer and Jacob Grandison are solid three-point shooters, and Illinois ranks in the top 30 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. This team isn’t great at any one particular thing, but they play solid, all-around basketball and are the defending Big Ten champions.

Iowa is the No. 5 seed in this tournament, but the Hawkeyes have the third-lowest odds to win the whole shebang. Reigning Wooden Award winner Luka Garza moved on to the NBA, yet Iowa has remained competitive under Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes do not turn the ball over, leading to this offense ranking very high in efficiency metrics. Keegan Murray is the top performer on the team with 23.3 PPG and 8.6 RPG while making over 55% of his field goals.

There is some value in Rutgers to win the Big Ten Tournament as a No. 4 seed. The Scarlet Knights have had one of the weirdest seasons we’ve seen in quite some time. They have terrible losses to Lafayette and UMass, but they have also been able to knock off Purdue, Iowa, and Illinois this campaign. Rutgers will likely be an underdog to Iowa in the quarterfinals of this competition, yet the Scarlet Knights have been proving doubters wrong all season.
