The SEC is no longer just a football powerhouse. We have seen SEC basketball improve by leaps and bounds over the past several years, and this is now the second- or third-best conference in the country. At least six teams from this conference are projected to make the NCAA Tournament, and Kentucky and Auburn are both strong national title contenders. A team from this conference hasn’t won the national championship in a decade, but that could change next month.
The 2022 SEC Tournament will take place at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida from March 9-13. It is the first time that this tournament is in Florida since 2009. The last time it was in the Sunshine State, we saw Mississippi State overcome the odds to win four games in four days to lock up the SEC’s automatic bid.

Kentucky is the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament, but the Wildcats are favored to win their 32nd SEC Tournament title. They have the odds-on favorite to win the Wooden Award in Oscar Tshiebwe, and he has been spectacular after transferring to Kentucky from West Virginia. Tshiebwe is averaging 17.3 PPG and 15.3 RPG while making over 60% of his field goals. He is by far the best rebounder in the country, and he has been an excellent defender too, leading Kentucky in steals and blocks.
The Auburn Tigers have the potential No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Jabari Smith has shown a lot of promise in his lone season with the Tigers, and he is vying with Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero to be the top pick this summer. Smith is averaging 17.1 PPG and 6.9 RPG for Auburn. He is the team’s only good three-point shooter, knocking down 43.6% of his treys, while the team as a whole is making just over 32% of his triples on the year.
Tennessee has not won the SEC Tournament since an overtime victory over Kentucky all the way back in 1979. Rick Barnes has turned the Volunteers into a constant title contender once again though, and they closed out the year with nine wins in their last ten games and knocked off Kentucky, Auburn, and Arkansas in Knoxville during that stretch. The Volunteers rank third nationally in defensive efficiency, and they have two solid scorers in Kennedy Chandler and Santiago Vescovi. This team has rebounded nicely since losing Olivier Nkamhoua to a season-ending injury last month, and they might be the best value on the board.
It might be tempting to give Alabama a look at 16-1 too. The Crimson Tide won the SEC Tournament last year, and they shouldn’t have a problem with either Vanderbilt or Georgia in their first game. They have wins over LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas already this season, and non-conference victories over Gonzaga, Houston, and Baylor are second to none.
