As the 2019-20 college basketball season gets underway, a lot of people are making their predictions. Of course, it’s easy to pick an NCAA Tournament winner from the favorite like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and Michigan State, as all of these teams are the favorites. We’re doing a deeper dive to see if there’s value further down the board.
Here’s a look at the four best bets to win March Madness with odds of 20/1 or longer:
VILLANOVA WILDCATS
ODDS TO WIN 2020 NCAA TOURNAMENT: +2000
The Jay Wright difference – the product of a man who has won two of the last four national titles – is the ultimate reason Villanova deserves a long look on this list. Even though they’re coming off a down year, they have the pedigree to rebound in a big way.f
Villanova’s chemistry just didn’t work last season and that is something that happens with teams. The pieces might seem to be there, but one or two players make it harder for everyone to work properly together. The player who was widely acknowledged as being the problem player on the 2018-19 Villanova roster is Jahvon Quinerly. He just didn’t get along with Wright or the other players on the team. Now that he has transferred to Alabama, Villanova might have the harmony and togetherness it needs to once again become the clear class of the Big East and get a high NCAA Tournament seed once again. It won’t hurt to have five-star recruit Jeremiah Robinson-Earl on the roster.
Last season, Villanova was a No. 6 seed. If the Wildcats can be a No. 3 seed this year, the Wildcats can have a realistic chance to go deep in the Dance.
OREGON DUCKS
ODDS TO WIN 2020 NCAA TOURNAMENT: +2800
The coaching of Dana Altman is impossible to ignore. Oregon wasn’t very good during the regular season and needed to win the Pac-12 Tournament just to make the NCAA Tournament. However, they did, and then went on to win two games in the NCAA Tournament and nearly beat the eventual national champion, Virginia.
Oregon had a young team last season, which should be more developed this year. On top of that, they have a veteran leader at the most important position, point guard, as Payton Pritchard should knit together this team at both ends of the floor. The ingredients are there for Oregon to be a top-three NCAA seed and go on a run.
OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
ODDS TO WIN 2020 NCAA TOURNAMENT: +3300
The common thread in these teams is coaching. You have to have big-time coaches in order to beat the Kentuckys and Dukes of the world in March and reach the Final Four with a chance to win the national title. Chris Holtmann has been an excellent college basketball coach for several seasons, winning NCAA Tournament games in consecutive seasons at Ohio State, after winning at a high rate with Butler in previous years. Holtmann has Kaleb Wesson – his outstanding big man and a candidate for Big Ten Player of the Year – returning for another season along with three other four-star recruits. The Buckeyes should very much be in the national mix.
HOUSTON COUGARS
ODDS TO WIN 2020 NCAA TOURNAMENT: +5000
The Cougars don’t rely on one player, which is exactly their strength. Houston got its highest NCAA Tournament seed last season (No. 3) since the 1984 national runner-up team, and it didn’t have a single superstar player. This has become more of a system under Kelvin Sampson as each year, the teams seem to be a sum of their parts. Houston sends five guys to the glass and has five players playing tough defense. They’ll win with effort and depth and energy, and this is what makes them a viable candidate to go deep into another NCAA Tournament.
