The college football season is upon us, and if you want to get a sense of which teams are more likely to be involved in games which go over the under-over point total each week, here are four strong candidates before we kick things off. The one caveat here: Sportsbooks might set over-under totals very high for these teams in certain instances, so you will want to note if they are overvalued against a specific opponent at a particular point in the season, but on a general level over 12 or 13 games, these teams do figure to be part of high-scoring games because of their makeup:
UCLA Bruins
The Bruins lost a 43-38 game to USC in their next-to-last game of the 2020 regular season and lost a 48-47 game to Stanford in the 2020 regular-season finale. This is a classic great-offense, bad-defense team, which is exactly what you are looking for when identifying teams most likely to hit the over on a relatively consistent basis during the season. UCLA does bring back the quarterback from last season’s potent offense, Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Defense is still a huge question. It is not the opinion of many experts that the Bruins have solved their defensive problems. If pundits and analysts are high on UCLA, it is because they think the offense can outscore opponents even if the defense has a tough day.
Ole Miss Rebels
The Rebels lost a 63-48 game to Alabama last year and lost a 53-48 game to LSU. They won a 59-42 game against South Carolina and lost a 51-35 game to Florida. Great offense, terrible defense. Matt Corral, the quarterback for Ole Miss, is a dark-horse Heisman Trophy candidate this year. There is every expectation that Ole Miss will pile on the points but give up a ton to Alabama, Texas A&M, and the other especially good teams in the SEC this year. It all lines up for a lot of overs in the coming three months.
Miami Hurricanes
Miami received a very pleasant surprise when quarterback D’Eriq King, whom many analyst felt was ready for the NFL and could have been a top-50 draft pick had he declared, instead chose to stay at school for one more year. The problem with King – and this is something to monitor – is that he got injured in Miami’s bowl game. He will start against Alabama in Week 1 of this season, but if his health is not 100 percent, meaning that his agility and mobility are limited in the pocket, that could take a bite out of Miami’s offense. If he is healthy, though, this offense should roar. The defense is not very good. It gave up 62 points to North Carolina late last season, and the Tar Heels have most of their important offensive players coming back in 2021.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Red Raiders have consistently had a weak defense. Multiple coaches have not been able to figure out how to get this team to play better defense. What also doesn’t help is that great Big 12 teams – Oklahoma and Iowa State in particular – have great offensive talent and coaching and are in position to post big numbers against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have a reasonably potent passing attack, but beyond that, they are trailing in games so often that they always have to throw the ball in second halves of games and score touchdowns just to keep scores respectable. This is another good over team to take.
