Heisman Trophy Betting Odds Update for November 6, 2019

With both LSU and Alabama being on a bye week, one might think that the Heisman Trophy odds wouldn’t shift that much as two of the top quarterbacks in the race didn’t even play. That’s not the case as we saw plenty of movement with Tua Tagovailoa’s odds shortening. This week will tell us everything we need to know as Alabama and LSU clash on Sunday. Here’s a look at the updated Heisman Trophy odds with a look on how they’ve changed since last week.

JOE BURROW, LSU
ODDS TO WIN: -125

LAST WEEKS ODDS: -120

The LSU quarterback, who has thrown for 30 touchdowns against just four interceptions, had the week off as LSU rested on their bye week. While his stats are unchanged, he’s inched down slightly from -125 to -120 this week.

There are concerns about Burrow and LSU because Auburn’s defense had success containing the LSU passing game. Now comes the huge showcase game at Alabama this Saturday. Can he cut through their defense?

One important question is whether Tua Tagovailoa will be healthy enough to play in that game, and it seems Tua will probably be ready, though it is not a guarantee. Nevertheless, Tua or no Tua, Burrow has to put his best foot forward. If he does, the award is going to be his. If he wins but doesn’t play well, that opens the door for others.

JALEN HURTS, OKLAHOMA
ODDS TO WIN: +250

LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +225

The Oklahoma quarterback has thrown for 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions, completing 74 percent of passes, notching over 2,400 passing yards. Hurts has also put together 801 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. He’s also coming off a bye week, which is why his stats also haven’t changed but his odds did ever so slightly.

Hurts was hurt by a loss to Kansas State in Oklahoma’s most recent game, likely removing them from the College Football Playoff picture. Even so, his stats are impressive and that’s keeping him in the race.

TUA TAGOVAILOA
ODDS TO WIN: +375

LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +500

The runner-up in last year’s Heisman race has thrown for 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions this season, with over 2,100 yards passing, 75 percent completions, and two rushing touchdowns. Tagovailoa needs to play against LSU, and his improved odds reflect a widespread belief that he will in fact be ready for Saturday afternoon. The fact that Alabama has been installed as a favorite of more than a field goal reflects a belief that the Crimson Tide will win, which would naturally improve Tua’s position in the race, while just as clearly hurting Burrow’s chances.

JUSTIN FIELDS, OHIO STATE
ODDS TO WIN: +750

LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +600

The Ohio State quarterback has thrown for 24 touchdowns and only one interception, over 1,600 passing yards and 69 percent completions. Fields has compiled over 300 rushing yards with nine rushing touchdowns. He’s also coming off a bye week but you can see that his odds lengthened sizably during the week off.

Fields is being crowded out by his rising teammate, Chase Young, as you will see below. Fields is also running up against the reality that either Joe Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa will probably improve their Heisman odds this coming weekend. He’ll have his chance to shine with games against Penn State and Michigan coming up.

CHASE YOUNG, OHIO STATE
ODDS TO WIN: +800

LAST WEEK’S ODDS: +2500

The Ohio State pass rusher has five forced fumbles, 22 solo tackles, seven assisted tackles, and a whopping 13.5 sacks. He is legitimately the best defensive player in the country but with so many good quarterbacks in the race, he’s been a bit overlooked. Young was such a beast against Wisconsin in Ohio State’s last game that he has continued to receive more media chatter, which does help with Heisman ballots across the country. If Young continues to dominate without interruption, he can make a run at the trophy. It won’t be easy, but he will be invited to New York in December.

CHUBA HUBBARD, OKLAHOMA STATE
ODDS TO WIN: +4800

The Oklahoma State running back is the only other player on the board. He has rushed for 1,604 yards and 18 touchdowns through two-thirds of the season. Last week against TCU, Hubbard rushed for 223 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. While he’s has yet to lose a fumble this season, he continues to pile up the big numbers. A good showing against Oklahoma later this month will give his odds a shot in the arm.
