10 BEST NFL FREE AGENTS STILL AVAILABLE PART 2

BY ADAM GREENE

We continue our look at the best available free agents as the third week of training camp begins.

7. Damon Harrison, Defensive Lineman

(Age: 31. 2019: 49 tackles, three for a loss, two sacks, three passes defended)

It’s a legitimate surprise to see Harrison still available at this point. He’s not coming off an injury, as Tony Jefferson and Dre Kirkpatrick. My suspicion is a team wants to get a health and weight check on a guy nicknamed “snacks” that played at 350 pounds.

Harrison is a middle plug in a defense, a true nose tackle and a team looking to stop a running squad may look to add him if he doesn’t break the scale when he shows up for his workout.

Best Fit: Seattle Seahawks

6. Clay Matthews, Edge Rusher

(Age: 34. 2019: 37 tackles, nine for a loss, eight sacks, two forced fumbles, three passes defended)

For whatever reason the consensus is that Matthews had a down season with the Rams, but the stats and game tape tell a different story. He might have been more expensive than they were willing (or able with their salary cap situation) to pay, but his numbers are nearly identical to those he laid down in his last four seasons with the Green Bay Packers. And he posted them in LA while missing three games with a broken jaw.

Best Fit: Arizona Cardinals

5. Eric Reid, Safety

(Age: 28. 2019: 130 tackles, seven for a loss, four sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble six passes defended)

Safety, for the most part, is undervalued in the NFL. Reid had an off year in coverage, but put up monster stats across the board. Playing a more classic strong safety role would fit him better. If live preseason games were being played, it’s likely Reid would have already been snapped up as teams’ deficiencies in the defensive backfield would be on display for all to see. As it is, teams only now, this week, have been allowed to perform contact practices. Once coaches and GMs get a feel for what they have (and don’t have) don’t expect Reid to be on his BarcaLounger long.

Best Fit: Cleveland Browns

4. Trumaine Johnson, Cornerback

(Age: 30. 2019: 25 tackles, one for a loss, two passes defended, one interception)

Johnson’s tour of duty with the New York Jets was a disaster. After a promising start to his career with the St. Louis then Los Angeles Rams, Johnson was considered one of the best corners in the league. Once he left for NY, it all went to pieces.

But that same guy is still there that started nearly every game for the Rams from 2013 to 2017 and that’s why he’s this high on the list. He just needs to go to the right situation.

Best Fit: Las Vegas Raiders
