Amid Departure Rumors, Tom Brady Still Favored To Stay With Patriots

The NFL offseason has a lot of interesting questions and points of uncertainty, none greater or more newsworthy than Tom Brady’s decision on where he will play next season. Brady is going to play; it’s a question of where. The iconic quarterback, who will make the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility and is legitimately the greatest quarterback who has ever lived, could either choose to stay with the New England Patriots or go somewhere else after two decades of service in Foxborough. The early read is that Brady is favored to stay on with the Patriots.

WILL TOM BRADY BE ON THE PATRIOTS’ ROSTER IN WEEK 1 OF 2020?

YES -200
NO +150

It is known in NFL circles that the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers are two of the teams which have been prominently mentioned as possible landing spots for Brady if he doesn’t choose to stay with the Patriots. Brady would enjoy the sunny weather, a marked change from the bitter cold winters of Massachusetts. Especially in the Chargers’ case, Brady could relocate to a team which has a defense capable of going deep into the playoffs. The Chargers’ offense is what would need a makeover. The Raiders aren’t as much of an AFC contender, but playing the first NFL season in Las Vegas would be an interesting and exciting scenario for Brady and the NFL at large. He’d probably mesh well with Jon Gruden, who also shows a fiery, competitive spirit.

COMMERCIAL AND IMAGE

Tom Brady released an image on social media in late January with his silhouetted figure in a tunnel between the playing field and the exit to the stadium. Many people speculated that the silhouette was moving toward the exit, not the field, suggesting that Brady might be retiring or leaving the Patriots. This created a lot of speculation and questioning.

Then Brady appeared in a commercial during the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 2. In the commercial, Brady said he’s “not going anywhere,” a much clearer declaration that he is going to stay with the Patriots, even though no official decision or announcement has been made. The NFL is waiting not for a suggestion or an inclination, but for final word on Brady’s move. That has not arrived yet.

WHY IT MAKES SENSE FOR HIM TO STAY IN NEW ENGLAND

It makes sense for Brady to stay in New England mostly because he has played nearly two decades for the Patriots. Would he really want the disruption of having to go to a new team and learn a new offensive system with new communications dynamics? That might be hard to go through; it would certainly represent a disruption to Brady’s methods and practice habits. It would be logistically challenging.

The other big reason is that Brady could still continue to play for Bill Belichick, one of the great coaches in the history of football. All they really need is a few offensive pieces and there are guys like Amari Cooper, A.J. Green and others available that can transform this offense overnight. They weren’t that far away from a Super Bowl this year; there’s no other destination that will allow him to get closer to a ring than in New England.
