Betting Odds Show Raiders Expected To Move On From Derek Carr In 2020

The future of Derek Carr with the Raiders is very uncertain. After getting booed off the field in the team’s closing game in Oakland, reports have surfaced that he’s simply not on the same page with head coach Jon Gruden. The team will move from Oakland to Las Vegas next season, which makes it important for the Raiders to arrive at a firm decision on who their quarterback will be when they open in a new stadium in front of new fans in a new city. BetOnline.ag has posted odds on whether Carr stays or goes, and right now, he’s favored to go.

The reality is that this was a prove-it year for Derek Carr and while he had a good stretch in the middle third of the season, Carr and the rest of the Raiders’ offense have faltered late in the season. Oakland was torn apart by the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Raiders’ offense didn’t do well against the Cincinnati Bengals or Jacksonville Jaguars. They’ve been a no-show in second halves, getting outscored 78-9 in their last four second halves. Nothing about this offense has performed at a high level since the middle of November, causing the Raiders to crash and burn.

Part of it is that the team doesn’t have enough good weapons for him at the wide receiver position. Sure, Darren Waller was a great find and Tyrell Williams was a good signing but Williams is more of a No. 2 option and there’s nothing beyond him among the wide receivers. Also, the Raiders offensive line was much better early on in the year as Carr has been sacked 15 times in his last six games.

So is it his fault? It’s hard to say. The Raiders could do a lot worse than Carr but it also feels like they known his ceiling. He’ll cost them just $5 million in dead cap space if they want to cut him and with a move to a new city, they might feel like it’s time for a change.

POSSIBLE NFL DRAFT REPLACEMENTS

The Raiders won’t have a top-five pick, which means that Joe Burrow won’t be on the board for them. It will be interesting to see if Jon Gruden likes what he sees when he moves down the draft board. Possible selections include Oregon’s Justin Herbert, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa – who has been injured and is recuperating – and possibly Washington’s Jacob Eason. Obviously, available draft picks depend in part on what other teams do, but the Raiders trying to move up for Burrow at No. 1 would require a ton of compensation, which they probably won’t do. Tagovailoa is likely to go early as well, so that leaves guys like Eason, Herbert or maybe someone like Utah State’s Jordan Love.

POSSIBLE TRADE DESTINATIONS

The trade destinations which make the most sense for Carr include – but are not limited to – the following teams:

The Carolina Panthers, who might choose a new quarterback given how much Cam Newton has been hurt, the Indianapolis Colts, who could consider Carr a better option than Jacoby Brissett and the Chicago Bears, who have seen Mitchell Trubisky struggle. The Bears make plenty of sense as the two sides have done business before. Carr gives them a sizable upgrade at the position as they don’t need someone to carry them; they just someone to make safe throws and avoid turnovers. The Colts and Panthers are virtually in the same boat too. We’ll see if any make a move for Carr but each team probably won’t want to give up a lot for him.
