With the Los Angeles Chargers parting ways with Philip Rivers, there has been a lot of debate as to where he’ll end up. Rivers is 38 years old but some people feel he still has something left in the tank. If that’s true, he would serve as an upgrade on many rosters.
Rivers has moved his entire family to the state of Florida, prompting speculation that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the place where he’ll end up. Let’s take a look at that option and the other spots on the board:
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: +200
It is true that the Buccaneers have not arrived at a final and firm decision on Jameis Winston, which means they could still keep him if they wanted to. However, it could be argued that the Bucs’ lack of a decision means they won’t keep Winston. If we accept that the Buccaneers are going to let Winston find another team, Rivers does become a natural choice to go to Tampa for coach Bruce Arians. It is known in the NFL that Arians works really well with veteran quarterbacks. He brought forth Carson Palmer’s very best football with the Arizona Cardinals. Tampa Bay has very good wide receivers. Rivers could do much worse than land with the Bucs. This would be a good outcome for the player and the team.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: +300
This also makes so much sense for Rivers. The Colts have other pieces on their roster: receivers, linemen, running backs, and a solid defense. Indianapolis is looking for a quality quarterback after Andrew Luck’s retirement. Rivers would step into a situation where he and his team are ready to win. He’d get excellent coaching from Frank Reich, one of the sharper offensive minds in the NFL and if Rivers doesn’t go to the Bucs, the Colts are the other especially strong choice for him.
CAROLINA PANTHERS: +400
It is uncertain what the Panthers want to do with Cam Newton. We know that he’s been injured a lot in recent years and faces questions about his durability. If his situation deteriorates, Rivers could step in. However, the Panthers are well behind the Bucs and Colts as a possible choice for Rivers.
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: +400
It is actually more possible that Rivers would land with the Raiders than the Panthers. Las Vegas has greater doubts about Derek Carr than Carolina does about Cam Newton. The Panthers don’t have a supremely stable quarterback situation but the Raiders’ quarterback situation seems to cause the coaching staff plenty of concern. Some people might wonder why Rivers would go to a rival team after spending so many years with the Chargers. The answer: The Raiders no longer being in Oakland might take the edge off that particular confrontation in the AFC West.
MIAMI DOLPHINS: +550
Rivers would probably not particularly care for the Dolphins. An aging player late in his career would want to go to a place where he would reasonably compete for a playoff spot and maybe even a championship. Miami is not that place. The Dolphins are in the middle of a full rebuild. This just doesn’t seem like a coveted place for Rivers, who has a wide menu of choices to look at.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: +2000
This would be a backup option for Rivers, and it is hard to see Rivers standing on the sidelines in headsets watching Drew Brees play quarterback. One team will have Rivers as a starter, so the Saints shouldn’t be taken too seriously in all of this.
