Chargers Now Favored To Be Brady’s Next Team

The Tom Brady saga had a new twist this week. The New England Patriots and Brady are typically clandestine, so we’re left to examine the small clues that we receive to determine whether it has significance or whether it’s meaningless. The latest sign is that Brady’s suite at Gillette Stadium has been cleaned out, which could be the latest piece of evidence suggesting that he’s leaving.

As a result, the odds for his landing spots have been refreshed as the Los Angeles Chargers are now favored to land Brady – if he leaves. Are they the best bet or is there value elsewhere?

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
ODDS OF SIGNING BRADY: +200

It’s a bit bizarre to see the Chargers as the frontrunner because they could simply re-sign Philip Rivers. General Manager Tom Telesco said this week that “in a perfect world”, Rivers would be their quarterback. The Chargers are also a team with Anthony Lynn at head coach, who is viewed as a so-so bench boss, and they’re fresh off a 5-11 season. Is that the best landing spot for Brady?

The speculation here is that with the Chargers moving to a brand-new stadium next season, they are desperate to bring the crowds to the game. A four-time Super Bowl MVP would help. Brady was born and raised in San Mateo, California, and they have plenty of cap space to make the move.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
ODDS OF SIGNING BRADY: +700

Could Brady end up as the new face of the Raiders? It seems like the soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Derek Carr are not a marriage made to last, which means they would also be in the market for a passer. Similar to the Chargers, the Raiders are also moving into a new stadium (and city) next season, so they would love to make a splash.

The Raiders are likely to draft a young quarterback, so signing Brady could allow them to have a bridge year or two while the youngster develops behind him. It would be weird to see Brady in the Silver & Black, but they’re second-in-line in terms of the odds in a tie with the Dallas Cowboys at +700.

CLEVELAND BROWNS
ODDS OF SIGNING BRADY: +900

The Browns were previously the favorite for this prop but a lot has changed, which has dropped them from the +200 range all the way down to +900. Originally, many people felt that current Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would end up as the Browns head coach. They opted to go with Kevin Stefanski instead. It doesn’t mean the Browns won’t pursue Brady but it does suggest that the fit is not as good as it would have been had McDaniels taken over.

The other issue with the Browns is they used the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to select Baker Mayfield. Signing Brady means they’d either have to bench or move Mayfield, which feels a bit premature right now. However, it’s hard to count out the Browns as they haven’t had a winning season since 2007. Bringing the winningest quarterback of all-time would surely help change the culture in the locker room and on the field.
