Examining 2020 NFC East Win Totals

The NFC East was one of the worst in the league last year after the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles didn’t dominate (as expected) while the New York Giants and Washington Redskins were as bad (if not more) than advertised.

The 2020 regular season win totals have opened up for the teams in the NFC East. Let’s take a look at how the division will be shaping up in 2020:

DALLAS COWBOYS

REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL: 9.5

The Cowboys most notable move since the end of the 2019 season was replacing long-time (and heavily scrutinized) head coach Jason Garrett in favor of former Green Bay Packers and Super Bowl XLV coach Mike McCarthy. Dallas has seemed to have all the pieces the last few years, including star talent on offense, a stellar offensive line, and a solid defense, yet they still haven’t been able to piece it altogether. They still have all the aforementioned heading into 2020, so bringing in a veteran coach with a background of success like McCarthy is supposed to get them over the hump. They still have those stars in Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot, and Amari Cooper, as well that talented defense and offensive line, but they did lose some key pieces, like cornerback Byron Jones (free agency) and center Travis Frederick (offensive line).

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL: 9

Philadelphia is another team who is returning the bulk of their team and looking to build of recent success. Despite winning the NFC East last season, the Eagles had their fair share of ups-and-downs, not securing the division until rattling off four straight wins in Weeks 14, 15, 16 and 17 in large part to exceptional play from star quarterback Carson Wentz. They were able to fill a large hole in their defensive secondary by adding cornerback Darius Slay but the offense needs lots of help. They have gaping holes at the wide receiver position as that hasn’t been addressed by the team as of yet.

NEW YORK GIANTS

REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL: 6.5

Despite not having much success last year, the Giants haven’t shaken up their roster much just yet. Besides bringing in former Patriots special teams coach Joe Judge to be their head coach, they haven’t brought much more to the Big Apple this offseason. Second-year quarterback Daniel Jones seems like he has potential to be a solid starter, so they need to begin to build around him. The Giants already have their running back of the future in superstar Saquon Barkley but the offensive line is a question mark. On defense, they have all sorts of holes, although they did splurge for a cornerback in free agency with Carolina’s James Bradberry.

New York does have the No. 4 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft but they’ll have to have a stellar draft if they are to be competitive in 2020.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL: 5

Finally, we have the Redskins, who are also bringing in a new head coach in Ron Rivera after his departure from the Panthers. However, he will be walking into a tough situation in Washington. Case Keenum and now second-year quarterback both struggled steering the Redskins offense, and now the team has second-overall pick. They have a couple solid young talents Derrius Guice and Terry McLaurin, but the amount of question marks on this team heavily outweighs the combo. Rivera is an established coach with a record of success, but doing it in Year 1 of his Washington tenure. They have a long way to go.
