Every season we have a few NFL coaches that enter the new year on the hot seat. This year is no different as the early odds have come out for which head coach will be fired first. While many coaches may feel pretty secure about where they stand, others are entering with a ton of uncertainty. Here we break down the top four candidates to lose their job quickly into this new season, kicking it off with a coaching veteran.
Vic Fangio
Vic Fangio currently has the best odds at getting fired first in this upcoming NFL season. The head coach of the Denver Broncos has a lot of pressure on his shoulders, simply because the team isn’t performing like their management had hoped since his hiring. Denver has had a serious issue at the quarterback position, and they hope Teddy Bridgewater is able to give some spirited competition to Drew Lock over the offseason. Not only that, but Fangio was supposedly a defensive guru, and this Denver defense has been below average.
Matt Nagy
Many people actually expected Matt Nagy to be fired last season, but he was able to hold onto his job for another year. This year is without a doubt his last opportunity to get the Chicago Bears back on the right track. They are expected to play Andy Dalton at the beginning of the season, though they do have their newly drafted Justin Fields. If things start going sideways, fans will demand Fields hits the turf and if Nagy isn’t able to satisfy those demands their upper management may have to let him go quickly.
Mike McCarthy
Given how Jerry Jones has been itching to get his Dallas Cowboys into championship contention, another failure of a season may cause him to pull the plug on Mike McCarthy. McCarthy took over last season, leading the injured and struggling Cowboys to a measly 6-10 record. The biggest problem was their defense, as they were atrocious most of the year before making some minor improvements towards the end of the season. If McCarthy is unable to correct some issues and improve with Dak Prescott back at quarterback, there is a very high chance he doesn’t keep his job much longer.
Mike Zimmer
While Mike Zimmer has long been the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, there were some rumblings that his job could be on the line last season. The team was struggling to perform consistently, and they overall didn’t look close to a championship contending team. Zimmer has been well known for his defensive intelligence, but they had a lot of problems on that side of the football. Assuming Minnesota doesn’t come out of the gates strong this upcoming season, they could end up firing Zimmer early on in the season in order to bring in an offensive minded coach. Their offense wasn’t terrible at all but they could definitely be in the market for a change of pace at head coach.
