We are six weeks into the season and there are several coaches already on the hot seat. Which team will try to save the season by firing the head coach? Some don’t make sense, as teams may be rebuilding but there are a handful who came into this season with high expectations but have stubbed their toe early on. So let’s take a look at which candidate could hear these words first; “YOU’RE FIRED.”
Doug Pederson, Jaguars (-140)
The bleeding continues for Doug Pederson and the Jaguars after losing in London to the Bears. The big question is, will Pederson return from the U.K. as the head coach? Jacksonville faces the Patriots in Week 7. It’s been a disastrous start for the Jags, and Trevor Lawrence hasn’t lived up to his new massive extension (5-year, $275M). Playoff hopes are all but over, and since taking over in 2022, Pederson has a record of 19-21. How long does owner Shad Khan wait before pulling the plug on the Pederson experiment?
Mike McCarthy, Cowboys (+400)
Jerry Jones says he’s not firing Mike McCarthy, but after getting blown out at home, you’d have to figure the end is near. In fact, the Cowboys have lost four straight at AT&T Stadium, including the playoffs. A team full of talent somehow continues to underwhelm. Sure, McCarthy has had three straight 12-5 seasons, but it hasn’t translated to any playoff success. If the Cowboys don’t have postseason success this year, he’s likely gone. But if they continue to disappoint, could Jerry Jones give McCarthy his walking papers midseason? Jones may already have a replacement in mind. Someone who isn’t working right now but has won before. Two words: Bill Belichick.
Kevin Stefanski, Browns (+600)
There are calls for Kevin Stefanski to be fired after a controversial decision in the Browns’ game against the Eagles. Trailing by 7, Stefanski decided to kick a field goal instead of going for a touchdown with under four minutes left to play. Cleveland never got the ball back. The Browns are 1-5, putting them in danger of falling out of the playoff race before the midway point of the season. Deshaun Watson looked better in that game but has been a disappointment this season. Stefanski plans to stick with his quarterback, and that move could lead to his eventual dismissal.
Antonio Pierce, Raiders (+600)
How quickly things have changed in Vegas for Antonio Pierce. Last season, he was heralded as the “perfect coach” of the Raiders, but so far, his squad has been a disaster on and off the field. The Raiders are 2-4 and suffered a humiliating loss to the Steelers. There has been tension within the team, as Davante Adams’ status with the Raiders continues to be questioned. The quarterback position has been terrible, with Aidan O’Connell taking over from Gardner Minshew, who hasn’t worked out as the big offseason signing. More than likely, Pierce survives the season, but with Mark Davis, you just never know.
