NFC SOUTH 2021 PREDICTIONS

BY ADAM GREENE

Since the 2012 season, only two NFC divisions have sent representatives to the Super Bowl; the NFC South and the NFC West. That’s nine consecutive Super Bowls and, not to spoil anything too much, I think the trend continues in 2021-22.

The division winner here should be obvious, but we’ll still get into it. There’s a good chance we got get three teams from this conference in the postseason this year, but the numbers (considering, again, the strength of the NFC West) probably aren’t favorable to that.

So who do I think will take the NFC South? Well, I hope you are sitting down.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: 14-3

Yes, I feel like the defending Super Bowl champions not only have the best chance to take the NFC South title, but probably lock up home field advantage in the playoffs as well. The arch nemesis for teams looking to repeat title runs is the fact that other teams want their players. I’m sure plenty of clubs had potential Tampa Bay free agents circled as the offseason began, but the Buccaneers and those players had other ideas. Tampa will being back every one of its 22 offensive and defensive starters this season and plenty of its back ups. That is unheard of in the free agency era.

I’m done trying to predict when Tom Brady will finally careen off the QB cliff. At this point, I’ll have to see it to actually believe it’s even possible.

ATLANTA FALCONS: 10-7

The Falcons have been a team that has consistently underachieved for years in spite of some of the best offensive talent in the league. While some of that talent is gone now, specifically Julio Jones traded away to the Tennessee Titans, the Falcons still have plenty. The fact that they can field a legitimate franchise quarterback in Matt Ryan should make all the difference.

This year, with Arthur Smith as the head coach, it finally will. This will be the best offensive attack Ryan has run since Kyle Shanahan left for the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. And it will keep Atlanta in the playoff hunt all season.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: 10-7

Picking Jameis Winston over Taysom Hill, something that seemed obvious to everyone except maybe Sean Payton, has put the Saints right back in the playoff hunt. They’re probably not a rival for a division title, but this team is still loaded on defense and has plenty of offensive playmakers, even with Michael Thomas out to start the season.

CAROLINA PANTHERS: 6-11

To be honest, this might be generous for the Panthers. This roster, outside of Christian McCaffery, should strike fear in no one other than opposing fantasy teams. While I’m all for giving Sam Darnold an extended chance in the NFL, I feel he’ll be a serious downgrade from what they had last season in Teddy Bridgewater.
