NFL Draft: Quarterbacks That Will Get a Coach and GM Fired Part 2

We’re continuing our look at Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert as a potential first round pick and likely franchise killer.

In comparing Herbert o Joe Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa, the distance between those players are massive. Yes, the Chargers need to take a QB, but you know what they should do? Call Cam Newton’s agent today and then they have a quarterback and can take a guy like Herbert in the second or third round where he should go. And, really, you’ll learn in my next QB article, that Herbert would not only NOT be my No. 4 QB (I’ve already released my top three), but he wouldn’t even be in the top six.

Look at this. Now Herbert doesn’t put his own highlight film together, but it’s a bad sign that the first throw selected would absolutely, 100 percent be an interception in the NFL.

Reverse throw? Worthless. Same for any called rush. When you’re highlight film is filled with these, or with screens, it’s a waste of time. I like his mobility. He can throw an accurate ball, but he uses the pump fake way too much, even when he doesn’t need to.

Let me show you a highlight film that’s eerily similar. Take a look.

Yeah. The Gabster himself. And, just like Blaine, if Herbert gets picked in the third or fourth (where he should be picked), everything’s good. If he turns into a starter, that’s a bonus. If he’s just a lifelong back up, he’s good and you’re team is fine. No. 6 overall?

I don’t see it.

Stat wise, you could at least make an argument for Herbert as a first rounder. You know who you can’t….?

2. JORDAN LOVE, UTAH STATE

2019: 61.9 completion percentage, 3,402 yards, 20 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 175 rushing yards, 6-4, 225 pounds

Where he’ll probably be picked: No. 20 overall, Jacksonville Jaguars

Where he should be picked: Fifth or sixth round, by who cares?

What in the hell has happened with NFL evaluations? What are they seeing on this kid’s film that makes him a first round pick? NFL.com has him going to the New England Patriots at No. 23 overall. CBS Sports has him ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect in the entire draft.

What are they seeing?

Again, his highlight film, the first play is 100 percent a pick in the NFL. No question. It’s not his fault. He didn’t put it together, but it’s not a good sign.

Second, look at those interceptions. He threw 17? No other top prospect even threw 10. And against this schedule?

There isn’t an elite performance against a single quality team there. Utah State even lost their laughably named “Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl” to Kent State, 51-41. In a QB duel against Dustin Crum, he was outplayed.

Is he draftable? Sure, in the fifth round or even later. He’s got an arm, decent touch and some athleticism. But he’s not shown anything elite on film or in any game that mattered. He hasn’t played with NFL talent and he certainly didn’t perform well when he faced NFL talent. Against LSU he was 15-of-30 for 130 yards and three picks with no touchdowns. Now, if the Pats take him, is he getting Bill Belichick fired? Obviously not, but I don’t Belichick is dumb enough to pick him in the fist round, even if he’s there. But, as I wrote earlier, I don’t think he will be. The Jags are dying to make another stupid QB pick to try (and fail) again. Does that get Doug Marrone and David Caldwell fired? Absolutely.
