32. MIAMI DOLPHINS (0-4)
WEEK 5 RANK: 32
The Dolphins were off last week, so their dubious distinction as the only team without a cover remains. That could change this week against the Redskins, who will be playing with a new head coach.
31. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (1-4)
WEEK 5 RANK: 31
The Redskins are the only team that’s close to Miami as far as gambling futility. One would think Washington wouldn’t be favored by 6.5 against anyone, but the Dolphins really are that bad. While the Dolphins will play for their first cover, the Redskins will play for their first non-backdoor cover.
30. ATLANTA FALCONS (1-4)
WEEK 5 RANK: 30
A beating at the hands of Houston was nearly enough to drop Atlanta one spot. The four-point underdogs went down by six in the third quarter and were never close to covering again. Their saving grace was having a legitimate cover, not a meaningless backdoor one like Washington.
29. NEW YORK JETS (1-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 26
At no point after halftime did it look like the Jets were going to cover, which is saying something for a 14-point underdog. Seeing as they’re so inept without Sam Darnold, this may not be the end of the Jets’ fall. Since the Dolphins and Redskins play each other this week, the 31-spot may be up for grabs.
28. BALTIMORE RAVENS (1-4)
WEEK 5 RANK: 27
Last week, we said “If (Baltimore) can’t get a cover as 3.5-point favorites against Mason Rudolph’s Steelers, it’s time to sound the alarm.” Well, not only did the Ravens not cover, but they nearly lost outright. Despite knocking Mason Rudolph out of the game, Baltimore needed overtime to finish the Steelers. The Ravens’ Week 1 destruction of Miami remains their only cover.
27. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (1-3-1)
WEEK 5 RANK: 25
The Chargers were facing the 29th-ranked team in last week’s ATS Power Rankings (Denver) at home and had a terrible performance. The Chargers never even looked like they were going to win, much less cover as 4.5-point favorites. It was a truly alarming performance that should give bettors pause when the Chargers host the Steelers on Sunday night.
26. CINCINNATI BENGALS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 24
The Bengals weren’t competitive in two of their ATS losses and just lost at home as 3-point favorites to the winless Cardinals. The good news is they’re 8.5-point underdogs this week against a Baltimore team that hasn’t covered in over a month.
25. CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 19
The Browns take a fall after another performance in which they didn’t look to belong on the same field as their opponent. Their only two covers are against teams lower than them on these rankings (Ravens, Jets).
24. NEW YORK GIANTS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 17
New York failed to cover for the first time with Daniel Jones. The bigger problem was how they were not close to covering as 5.5-point underdogs. Now they’re down to their third running back and they have to travel to Foxboro on Thursday night.
23. DENVER BRONCOS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 29
The Broncos vault up six spots after dismantling the Chargers. They’re far from trustworthy, but a dominant cover like that is hard to ignore. Next up is a home matchup with Tennessee.
22. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 18
The Seahawks are now 0-3 ATS at home. But that means they’re 2-0 on the road, which is where they’ll be this week. On top of getting extra rest after playing on Thursday night last week, they’ll get the Browns on a short week.
21. CHICAGO BEARS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 15
London was not kind to the Bears. Their two-cover streak came to an end as they head into their bye week. After that, they’ll face the red-hot Saints at home.
20. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 28
The Eagles picked up their second cover of the season and their first as favorites. Though they are the only cover for two of the lowest teams in our rankings (Washington, Atlanta) they would be 3-2 if not for a meaningless backdoor cover in Week 1.
19. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 13
Tampa’s inconsistency was back on display this week as they were shut down by the Saints. At least when you bet on Tampa, there’s no drama. You’ll know whether you’ve won or lost by halftime.
18. TENNESSEE TITANS (2-3)
WEEK 5 RANK: 11
For the third time this season, the Titans lost outright as favorites. Luckily, they’re dominant as underdogs, which is what they are this week when they travel to Denver.
17. ARIZONA CARDINALS (3-2)
WEEK 5 RANK: 23
The Cardinals are the lowest ranked of those with a winning ATS record because of how badly they were beaten in their losses. Two of their covers came against lower-ranked teams (Baltimore, Cincinnati). They’ll face another bottom-of-the-barrel ATS team in Atlanta this week.
