NFL Football Betting: Bad Beats for Week 5

Perhaps now former Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden can claim the worst beat of all this week as he was relieved of his coaching duties after a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots.

Firing Gruden after the Pats loss seems almost insulting… to the Patriots. In what universe was Gruden expected to win this game? This was an “L” the second the schedule came out last April. Frankly, with the way the NFL runs its AFC-NFC match-ups, you could have circled this one two years ago as a guaranteed defeat based on Gruden’s contract extension alone.

Of course, Gruden didn’t help his case as he was allegedly busted on video chatting up a young woman that is not his wife and smoking a, let me see here, I think the kids call it a marijuana cigarette? Now the Redskins may not have to pay him the rest of his salary on that two-year extension he signed in 2017. As bad beats go, that’s a killer.

But Gruden didn’t cost you money. There’s no way you touched that Redskins +15 last Sunday.

Nope, there is only one serious contender for our Bad Beat from Week 5 and it happened on Thursday night so you’ve had all weekend to be pissed about it.

No matter which way you bet in the Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks (+1.5) Thursday night game, you couldn’t feel good about it until the final seconds.

If you took the Seahawks and the -1.5, you had so many chances in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter to order that special craft beer at Buffalo Wild Wings in celebration. Trailing 29-24, Seattle put together a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take the lead. Only, it was a one-point lead, 30-29, so that meant they would go for the two-point conversion. If they got it, you’re good because the worst that could happen is the Rams drive down and tie the game with a field goal of their own, sending it to overtime.

Unless the game ended in a tie (and with the way both offenses were playing, what were the chances of that?), you had to like Russell Wilson, who sat on a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating for three quarters, to at least get the field goal and cover. But getting that two-point conversion and a Seahawks hold on defense would take care of that too.

But they didn’t convert. Not only that, but Los Angeles got the ball back and could have won the game outright, had Gerald Everett not butterfingered a Jared Goff pass that was picked off by Tedric Thompson on the deflection.
Again, at Seahawks -1.5 you’ve got new life. Obviously, the Seahawks want to push the ball down the field, pick up the insurance field goal, go ahead by four and give you the extra cash to order a plate of Ultimate Nachos for the table. You already had your bank card out.

But the Seahawks did nothing, went three-and-out on the dumbest offensive call of the night, an end-around to Tyler Lockett that lost eight yards when they only needed two to get the first down.

L.A. got the ball back with plenty of time, drove down the field to line up for what should have been the winning 44-yard field goal and, even though they didn’t make it, your dreams of ordering that Big Twist Pretzel fell just as wide as Greg Zeurlein’s kick attempt.
