NFL Football Betting: Washington Redskins at New York Giants

Jay Gruden may want to start updating his resume. The Washington Redskins are off to an 0-3 start, and the coach that was favored to be fired first per NFL futures odds is on thin ice. The axe could fall on Gruden at any moment, and the Washington Post reported on Friday that a loss to the New York Giants this Sunday might seal his fate.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS AT NEW YORK GIANTS
ODDS: GIANTS -3
TOTAL: 48.5
The NFL betting odds for this game have remained steady throughout the week. The Giants opened at -3, and that line has stayed level with fluctuations in the juice. This total has seen some movement though, opening at 47 and climbing all the way to 49.5 before falling to where it currently sits as of early Saturday morning.
INJURY REPORT
Star offensive tackle Trent Williams still hasn’t re-joined Washington, and the Redskins won’t have Derrius Guice until later in the year due to a torn meniscus. Jordan Reed has been ruled out for this game due to lingering effects from a concussion, and Terry McLaurin is questionable due to a strained hamstring. Center Chase Roullier is out, and guard Brandon Scherff is questionable too, so this offense has a lot of concerns.
Saquon Barkley will be out at least a month with an ankle injury, but fortunately for the Giants, their star running back doesn’t need surgery that will keep him our for longer. Wide receiver Russell Sheppard was placed on injured reserve this week though, and linebackers Tae Davis and Alec Ogletree are both out for this game.
WHEN WASHINGTON IS ON OFFENSE
Case Keenum doesn’t have bad stats this season. Keenum has completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 933 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. However, he had a poor performance on Monday night against Chicago and that has some calling for rookie Dwayne Haskins to start.
Keenum has established a strong rapport with rookie Terry McLaurin. McLaurin leads Washington with 16 catches for 257 yards and three touchdowns on the year, and the third-round pick ahs caught a touchdown each week. He is getting a steady number of targets, and McLaurin could see even more targets if Haskins takes over since they were teammates at Ohio State. That makes McLaurin’s NFL player props intriguing bets.
The ground game has completely stalled out. Veteran Adrian Peterson has just 62 yards on 22 carries, and Chris Thompson is seeing more and more work since he is a better receiver out of the backfield. Washington is averaging just 2.8 yards per carry as a team this year.
This Giants defense might be a panacea for Washington’s offensive woes though. New York is dead last in the NFL in pass defense, allowing over 332 yards per game through the air. They are allowing a whopping 10.1 yards per pass, so Keenum could have his best performance of the season.
WHEN NEW YORK IS ON OFFENSE
Everyone is going crazy for Daniel Jones. He’s already earned the nickname ‘Danny Dimes’ after leading the Giants from 18 points down to beat Tampa Bay, and you can’t draw up a much better start for a rookie. He completed 23 of 36 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns, and he was also added two rushing touchdowns. Jones was efficient, but he must be protected better. He was sacked five times and fumbled twice last week.
The Giants lose the most dynamic playmaker in their offense with Barkley out. In his stead, Wayne Gallman will get the start. Gallman is entering his third season with the team, and he is averaging just 4.3 yards per carry. He has reached the end zone just twice in 169 career carries, so keep that in mind when perusing NFL game props.
Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard are the only two real threats in the receiving game. Engram has been targeted 30 times already this season, and he has 23 catches for 277 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Shepard has been the most active receiver, but the rest of the skill position talent is bleak.
Look for Washington to do what Tampa Bay didn’t by forcing Jones off Engram and Shepard. Engram and Shepard both finished with over 100 yards and a touchdown against the Buccaneers, so the Redskins will want to avoid those two players going off once more. Washington is allowing 7.8 yards per pass this year.
PREDICTION
Sharps were quick to conclude this game is likely to be high scoring. Although this game seems like a snoozer on paper, both of these defenses have been porous, so the over looks like a decent play.
