NFL Mock Draft 1.0: NEW YEAR NEW TEAM Part 7 (Picks 31-32 plus teams with no first rounder)

BY ADAM GREENE

This is it. We’ve reached the final picks of the draft with the presumed Super Bowl teams who will, in no way, both make the Super Bowl. It’s just how it is.

That being said, you rank teams in their earned spots in these mock drafts. Not where you think they’ll wind up. Frankly, I feel like this playoff field is the most unpredictable of the last half decade, but that’s mainly because the Patriots look like they MIGHT not make it. We shall see.

Here are your final first round picks as well as the first picks of teams that have traded away their first rounders.

31. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS – JALEN REAGOR, WR, TCU

(5-11, 195) 2019: 43 catches, 611 yards, five touchdowns

The 49ers could look at defensive back help, and they need it. They don’t have a lot of holes, but I don’t see how Kyle Shanahan passes up on a guy that can run a 4.29 40 and put a potential Tyreek Hill problem with a few more inches of size in the NFC West. As good as San Francisco’s defense has been, they need to keep scoring points to compete in the NFL’s toughest division and Reagor is a potential DeSean Jackson at worst.

32. BALTIMORE RAVENS – D’ANDRE SWIFT, RB, GEORGIA

(5-9, 215) 2019: 196 carries, 1,218 yards, seven touchdowns

I went back and forth on this pick and decided to simply go with what’s working for the Ravens, whether it’s sustainable or not. How long can they keep a running game together with other teams’ cast-off running backs? Who’s to say, but if they pick Swift here, they at least have the chance to develop their own triplets of Swift, Jackson and Brown. But if Reagor is here, you better believe they pick him.

CHICAGO BEARS (ROUND 2, PICK NO. 43) – TRAVIS ETIENNE, RB, CLEMSON

(5-10, 210) 2019: 192 carries, 1,536 yards, 18 touchdowns, 396 receiving yards, four touchdowns

Sometimes you just have to not be stupid when it comes to the draft. What would help the Bears offense more than just about anything (other than, you know, Mitchell Trubisky not instantly regressing in the progress he made of their last month of the season)? An every-down back that can run through the tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield. Congratulations. Draft Etienne and add three more wins to your schedule.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS (ROUND 2, PICK NO. 49) – TERRELL LEWIS, EDGE, ALABAMA

(6-5, 252) 2019: 31 tackles, 11.5 for a loss, six sacks

Both Bud Dupree and Javon Hargrave are free agents this offseason and the Steelers are notorious for letting guys walk. That means they’ll need a pass rusher and can’t afford to fool around in grabbing one, reach or not. You could do worse than a guy that’s earned playing time on one of the most stacked NCAA defensive rosters in the country. Like every other SEC player in the draft, he’s spent his collegiate career playing with and against future NFL talent. Don’t outsmart yourself when it comes to these guys. Turn in the card and go.

LOS ANGELES RAMS (ROUND 2, PICK NO. 52) – AUSTIN JACKSON, OL, USC

(6-6, 310)

I’m on record stating that it would make sense for the Rams to go offensive line with every single pick in this draft. Regardless, unless some kind of freakshow elite first round talent drops to No. 52 in round two, L.A. is taking an offensive lineman. They should have plenty of scouting done on Jackson, since he’s played every Saturday in their same stadium.

HOUSTON TEXANS (ROUND 2, PICK NO. 57) – JABARI ZUNIGA, EDGE, FLORIDA

(6-4, 246) 2019: 12 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, three sacks

Zuniga hasn’t been healthy in what feels like forever. That’s lucky for the Texans here, because if Zuniga had put up the numbers he should have, he’d been picked in the first 32. Rest him a while, hell, give him his rookie year off like the Cowboys did Jaylon Smith and reap the rewards in year two.
